T -A photo. .Summer job aid listed Skills Development Minister Gregory Sorbara has announced that $45.1 million will be spent to create 62,000 jobs for young people this sum- mer. Funding has been increased from $43.8 million last year to create 1,000 more jobs and to cover the in- crease in the minimum wage. The an- nouncement wit!' n!::dc by the Minister in a speech to the Board of Directors of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. • In his speech, Sorbara said that the outlook for the summer jof4market is generally healthy, however, summer jobs'are scarcer in Northern Ontario , than in other parts of the province. It broadens their horizons, providing there with that very important and hard to get first job experience," he added. In announcing that special attention would.be paid to Northern Ontario the Minister said that 23 per cent of the experience jobs would be located in the, north. Ile also said northern businesses that applied for funding through ( )SEP would he given special consideration. The programs are: Start -Up which provides interest-free loans to -students for summer businesses. The Minister said he expects about 1,250 businesses to be started, creating 1.500 jobs. The Ontario Summer Employment Program pays employers $1.25 an hour toward the salaries of young peo- ple hired tin- new summer jobs. About 53.0(H) jobs will be created this sum- mer through OSEP. Experience '87 will provide 7,500 career -related jobs in 26 Ontario government ministries and associated organizations. The Minister also announced a- 50 per cent increase in the amount of loans to students to start up summer businesses. The upper limit of the loans will bo to $3,000 from $2,000 enabling students '.'to broaden the range of businesses they establish."
