Catholic Church news
Father Vincent VanZuphthen was
guest celebrant at all the weekend
masses at the Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church at Grand Bend. Reader
for the 11 a -m. mass was Donald
Tiernes, with Mrs. Tiernes as Com-
munion distributor. Lydia • Duchou
was cantor and Paul Dietrich was
organist; the choir's special at com-
munion was "Father of Life": •
Sometimes we see people on
religious progams "testifying" or
"giving witness" to others about God
in their lives. St. John the Baptist was
the first great Christian witness; who
told of the Holy Spirit descending
upon Christ at His Baptism: That is
how the Good News of God is spread
today, through personal witnessing of
God in our lives. Such testimony goes
further to convince others of the real
presence of God than any other way
of teaching, in today's secular world.
Go out and spread that word, be, a
witness for Christ.
United Church
At Grand Bend United Church Rev.
Peebles' sermon topic was the
"Church's Mandate", based on the
scripture in Acts 1:2-11, God has given
the Church and Christian believers a
mandate or command. "Go ye to all
the world, preach the gospel and be
My witnessess," and He promised to
be with them always. To fulfill this
mandate we must use all of our
resources and abilities, be a light in
this darkened world, and practice
what we preach EVERY day of the
week.
As we look at the early church in
Acts 1; we find a pattern that helped
them to grow into a vibrant
evangelical church. They spent much
time in prayer and study of the Old
Testament, with the preaching of
God's word as the. focal part of God's
outreach. Lay people were trained
and encouraged to use their talents in
-.His work, to help others grow in the
faith, meeting the needs of the troubl-
ed and distressed. With the guidance
of the Holy Spirit, may God help us to
fulfill our mandate and meet the
challenges of today.
The doorgreeters were Alan and
Norma Walper, and Doug and Betty
Riddell.
Bible Study
Seventeen ladies attended Bible
study Tuesday morning at Sauble
Court. Nita Sinclair opened the
prayer, and Millie Desjardine led a
hymn sing. At the second lesson of
"The Courageous Heart", they
studied the meaning of courage.
Courageous people are bold, confi-
dent, helpful and encourage others.
They should not fear, but trust in God.
Millie Kane led the lesson and gave
the closing prayer. In February, the
ladies will be starting a new study, of
a workshop entitled "David and His
Psalms" by Carolyn Nystrom.

prayer of thanksgiving for faith, hope
and love, included in the preaching

songleader for both services. Phyllis

Phylhs Desjardine and Joy Mason
sang a duet in the morning and Alec

evening.
In the evening service, pictures
were shown of the vastness and beau-
ty of God's creation in Alaska. Tak-
ing these pictures brought peace and
new hope to an old man, who had
become embittered by circumstances
involving himself and his family. and
brought new hope and trust to the
young native friend who accompanied
him. The question may be asked
"What part of God's creation is not
awesome, nor majestic, even from
the minutest detail to its greatest
part?"
