At Granton anniversary
Presbytery president speaks

Sunday was the 25th anniversary of
the United Church women. The guest
speaker was Mary Giles of London,
• president of Middlesex Presbyterial
of U.C.W.
Her sermon was entitled "How do
we respond?" The call to worship was
"Today we are called to rejoice in our
gifts of women whose group life in the
church laid a foundation on which we
could build, and hope for the future".
In her message, the speaker said,
"We, as United Church Women, must
adjust ourselves to the Bible, never

Lanes on a Wednesday morning at
10:30, you would find 16little bowlers
ages three to five years, who have
become members of Don Watt's
Smurfs' league. Bowling is truly for
all ages!
In the annual executive bowling
tournament held November 30, we
had three winners - Edie Burt for the
treasurers, Joan Finkbeiner -
secretaries and Steve Daves as presi-
dent. Because Steve also out -bowled
the Petrolia representative of
presidents, he will advance to the next
level of this competetion, January 31.

cond term at the University of
Waterloo and is employed in the main
office of Canada Post in London for
four months, then will be returning to
Waterloo for his third term.
Seniors meet

gathered at the club room for another
meeting of Lucan seniors. President
Hamilton Hodgins welcomed
everyone including one visitor Jim
Davis. O'Canada was sung with Mary
Davis at the piano. Birthday wishes
went to Margaret Carter, Wilma
Hessells and Mabel Needham. The
minutes were read and adoped. There
were 12 Christmas cards sent to past
shut in members.
The President announced that
Ethel Langford was backhome from
the south and had an eye operation.
We are glad that Jean Miller is back
home again after her sugery. A new
year's greeting was read from the Ed
Dowdall family. .
Marjorie Steeper gave two
readings. The Calendar Man and
Forgetful Heads and Weary Heels.

The first euchre of 1987 was held
Wednesday night at Shipka Com-
munity Centre with eight tables
Winners were ladies' high; Doris
Eagleson, Greenway; ladies' low,
Rosie Rader, Dashwood; men's high,
Hugh Morenz; men's low, Aaron
Restemayer, Dashwood; most lone
hands was a three'way tie between
Ervin Ratz, Noreen McCann and
Teresa McCann and was won by
Teresa in a card draw. -
It was announced another euchre
would be held in two weeks on
January 21.
Hugh and Annie Morenz, along with
Les and Marjorie Adams, of Exeter,
paid respects to our late cousin,
Gladys (Maier) Mathers, Thursday
evening at the McCallum and Palla
Funeral Home in Goderich. Funeral
service was Friday, January 9 with
Rev. John D. M. Wood, officiating
with interment in Maitland Cemetery.
Mrs. Mathers was predeceased by
her husband Charles A. Mathers. Sur-
vived by six sons, Charles, Floyd,
Ken, John, Eugene and Raymond and
one daughter Judy, also seven
grandchildren.
Katherine Ratz, returned Co -Halifax
after a three-week holiday over
Christmas -and New Year's with her
mother, Helen Ratz, and family.
Community sympathy is expressed
to the Howard Maier family, in the
death of Howard's sister, Gladys
(Maier) Mathers last week in
Goderich.
Hugh and I, accompanied by Don-
na Corbett, visited an afternoon last
week with'our nephew, Ross 'Corbett,
at St. Joseph's Hospital, London.

Wayne Parkinson recorded the high

UCW at Zion
celebrates 25
The twenty-fifth anniversary of the
United Church Womens organization
was observed in Zion United Church
on Sunday. The organist, Margaret
Hern and choir members are all UCW
members. Scripture readings were
given by Leona Morley, Clarice Hern,
Susan Jaques and Dorothy Hern.
Three candles were lit, the first for
the past by Olga Hern, the second for
the present by Barbara French arid
the third for the future by Brenda
Hern. Offering was taken by Marina
Jaques and Janet Baker.
The message with the 25th anniver-
sary theme "Called to Respond" was
given by Mrs. Marjorie Johns, South
Huron Regional president for UCW
Marjorie used the Book of Esther
from Biblical references for her
message and dealt with the beginning
of UCW in 1962 as a continuation of the
work of the former womens group
known as Womans Missionary Socie-
ty, the story of UCW today as a sup-
portive body in the church and hopes
for the future with the hope that UCW
members will be able to respond in
whatever ways may be necessary in
life_and_work_of the church. .

were taken by Mabel Hern, Leona Ja-
ques and UCW president, Marilyn
Miller.

tha Bickell who was celebrating her
105th birthday. Although her eyesight
ailing her mind is very clear and

poem.

Davis of Ritz Villa, Mitchell, Satur-
day afternoon.

Church Women, held at Margaret
Hayter's home. She opened the
meeting with the poem "Day's End"
and' prayer. Helen Taylor read the
reports of the November and
December meetings and the ex-
ecutive meeting, and Margaret
Hayter reported a healthy balance in
the treasury in her year-end report.
Donations were made to many
charitable organizations in this area
in 1986, as well as to special U.C.W.
projects and our Sunday School.
Dorothy Ostrom • reported that $55(
had been forwarded to the church's
Mission and Service Fund plus $20(
for World Development and Relief.
An objective of $750 for 1987 was ac-
-cepted by the members.

wrap up year
The year-end business meeting of
the Women's Ministries of the
Pentecostal Church was held at the
home of Mrs. Ruth McLaren with ten
members present.
The meeting was opened by singing
hymns "Dare to be a Dainiel" and
"Standing on the Promises": Mrs.
Jean Triebner offered prayer.
- The minutes of thelastmeeting
were read by Mrs. Jean Jolly. The roll
call was answered with scripture
verses containing the word "stand".
The financial report was read by
Miss Marion Triebner and a letter
was read from the Blanchard family.
Pastor Donnan gave the message of
the afternoon, Proverbs 10:22. The
theme of his message, was "The
Blessing of the Lord". We need- the
blessing of the Lord now and always.
The blessing of the Lord is divine and
it is also abundant and enduring and
maketh rich and addeth no sorrow.
Pastor Donnan then offered prayer.
The year-end business then took
place. Mrs. Jean Jolly read the
minutes of last year's business
meeting. The elections took place:
president - Mrs. -Ruth McLaren; vice
president - Mrs. Jean Triebner;
secretary - Mrs. Jean Jolly; treasurer-
- Miss Marion Triebner; press
reporter - Mrs. Edith Millar.
Letters were read from mis-
sionaries. Mrs. Ruth McLaren read a
letter for the Falkners in Thailand
and Miss Marion Triebner read a let-
ter from the Formans. Ruth then read
a poem written by Brian Pennick's
daughter. Ruth also read the bulletin
from head office.
Mrs. Connie Donnan gave as her
special number a poem entitled .
"Memories from the kitchen". The
meeting was closed with prayer.
A delicious luncheon was served by
Mrs. Jean Triebner and Mrs. Ruth
McLaren and fellowship enjoyed by
all.

Mitchell on January 26.
Ruby Hill and Elaine Stephenson
led in worship, beginning with "1 said
to the man who stood at the gate of the
year ---". Standing at the Portals was
sungand Psalm 90 read, followed by
prayer.
U.C.W. services
Next Sunday, January 18, the
U.C.W.s of both Varna and Goshen
will conduct a 25th anniversary
church service. At. Goshen, lunch and
the congregational annual meeting
will follow.

Varna Church's annual meeting is
to be held on Sunday, January 25
following the church service. Enter-
tainment has been arranged for the
children, and the women are asked to
bring sandwiches, etc. for lunch.

was home at Christmas with his
mother and other family members.
David and Sandy and three of their
children were home from Virginia

Exeter UCW meets
The evening unit of Exeter U.C.W.
met January 5 at the church. Leader,
Marion -Frayne,-read a New Year's
peom.
A short business meeting was held
and members were reminded to at-
tend the general U.C.W. meeting on
Monday; January 19 at 1:30 p.m.
A New Year's program led by
Dolores Shapton's group gave us
scriptural basis for planning the new
year in our lives. -
Rob Essery, a local member of
Junior Farmers gave a very in-
teresting presentation of his recent
trip to Germany. Through his slides
and narrative all enjoyed the cultural
and geographic beauties of this coun-
try. The details on German farming
were of particular. interest. Melva
Ecker thanked Mr. Essery on behalf
of the group.
