Ifot spots, or areas with a'75 per cent or greater probability of out- break in eastern Ontario next year in - elude Ottawa -Carleton Region, Leeds, Grenville, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties. In southwestern. Ontario, they include Wellington, \V'alerioo, Huron, Perth,- Oxford, Brant and Elgin Counties. In the first 10 months o[ 1986, a total of 3,462 people were treated for rabies - a 97 -per cent increase over 1985. This makes it the worst year for rabies since 1958 when records started being kept. - "At the current rate, the number of people treated for rabies by the end o1 1986 could go as high as 4,154," said Dr. Charles Le Ber, senior veterinary consultant with the Ministry of Health. - He said that between January 1, 1986 and October 31, there were 2,946 reported cases of rabies reported in- volving wild and domestic animals, compared with 1,651 cases for the same period- last year. This represents a 78 -per cent increase. As usual, high numbers of cases were reported in eastern and southwestern Ontario. Foxes topped the list, with skunks a distant second. There were no surprises, except for the 28 raccoons reported in 1986. Dr. Le Ber said raccoon rabies is a major problem in Pennsylvania. if it moves northwards, it could spell trou- ble in southern Ontario communities where raccoon populations are already sizeable. But long-term prospects are never- theless encouraging, says Dr. Andrew Rhodes, Chairman of the Rabies Ad- visory Committee of the MNR. - Le Ber and Rhodes were cautious- ly optimistic about MNR's program of vaccinating wildlife by dropping thousands of baits containing live vac- cine from aircraft. For most customers. the effect of these reduc- tions will be imperceptible. In the morning, from 10:30 a.m. to 11::30 a.m., voltage will be reduced by three percent. Between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and again from 6;30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., voltage will be reduced by five percent. A five percent reduction in voltage distributed over the Hydro system is equivalent to reducing approximate- ly 500,000 kilowatts of electricity de- mand. That is the output of a single Pickering reactor and, if needed, is enough to meet the electricity needs of more than 180,000 homes. . Data collected from this test will also help Ilydro locate and resolve potential operating or customer problems. Ilydro conducts a voltage reduction test once a year. years, the ministry has tested the pro- gram on the fox population in an ex- perimental area within Huron County. Although rabies will continue to be a serious problem for the foreseeable future. Dr. Rhodes said that an ex- panded bait -drop program will lead ultimately to controlling outbreaks of rabies among foxes -- the primary wildlife carriers of the disease in Ontario. Marie, located at St. Joseph on Highway 21, north of Grand Bend, through Culligan Real Estate. The school was closed at the end of the 1986 school term with the students tranferred to St. Boniface School in Zurich. A lengthy discussion resulted from a request by vice chairman Ernest Vanderschot that the board protest the pending increase in postal rates. The hoard is advertising for a Religious Education and Family Life Consultant, effective September 1. Applicants are required to hold an On- tario Teacher's certificate, possess a wide background in leadership in -religious and family life education from kindergarten through O.A.C. levels. This is a three year term ap- pointment, and renewable. Named to the committee to hire the consultant are three trustees -- Vince McInnes of Wingham, Ron Murray of Dublin and John Devlin of Stratford. Also on the committee will be a priest and administrative staff. A proposal to delete the name Separate from the board's title made last December by McInnes who said he has never liked it in the title, was turned down as it must remain for legal purposes. However, for non- legal purposes Director of Education, William Eckert, said Roman Catholic School Board would be accepted. Trustee Vince McInnes of Wingham was named to the Education Week Organizing Committee which will be preparing for Education Week in 1988 as Perth County has been granted the privilege by the Ministry of Education of being responsible for the 1988 pro- vincial opening.
