Church service
The Sunday before Epiphany
church service was conducted by.
Rev. Robert Matheson on Sunday
morning. .
The sermon was entitled "We Have
A New Name". One recent
phenomenon when there has been a
change in government in our country
is to find a banner draped across the
front of the parliament buildings
reading. ",Under New Management".
The new party in power has sensed
such a radical change in the direction
of the government that they feel the
entire electorate is celebrating along
with them.
At this time of the year we
celebrate the many signs God places

diaconal work.
Ry MRS. ROBERT LAING
Cromorty
.Miss Milne, a' graduate of Ewart
College, conducted Sunday's church
service and spoke of the work of the
diaconal ministry. She said that.
while the main work of a
Presbyterian minister is to preach the
word of God in his sermon in church.
the diaconate is involved in all
aspects of the congregation, organiz-
ing and assisting in all groups in the
church.
Miss Milne traced the development
of the Christian education from Paul's
instructions to Timothy to Robert
Raikes' beginning the Sunday School,
to the forming of the Women's Mis-
sionary Society. Ewart College was
started as a deaconess training school
by the W.M.S. but in later years men
also attended the school and the
graduates became diaconates.
Since graduating from Ewart in
1981, Miss Milne has served in a
Youth Detention Centre in Toronto,
Flora House in Winnipeg and in a
youth ministry in Cornwall.

before us that he is active In our
midst: we recall the words of the pro-
phets who tell their listeners that God
will give a sign to the people in
Jerusalem: we recall Paul telling
some of his followers the reasoning
for God sending Jesus into the world
(Jesus Himself is the sign of God at
work) : John reminds us that creation
was the first sign of God at work.
With the Coming of Christ into the
world we recognize something radical
is happening. With the Advent of
Christ we are a -marked people. Jesus
gives us a new name. That name is
"Christian". We are like a people
under new management - yet that
managemdnt is the 'management' of
our Creator - we are under the 'new
management' of the Most Senior- Be-
ing in our universe.
