Presbyterian Church designed
by famous Condon architect
Carmel Presbyterian Church, Hen-
sall, is among the edifices featured in
a recently published high-quality
hardcover book titled"Victorian Ar-
chitecture in London and
Southwestern Ontario." The local
church is included in the section on
the Durand era, which gives a com-
prehensive biography of leading Lon-
don architect George Durand,
An imposing tower pictured in the
architect's original drawing was
never built.
A brief history of the Presbyterian
congregation in Hensall is also of-
fered. Their first church was built in
1848 to provide a pulpit for the
Reverend John Logie. He was recall-
ed later by a parishioner: "I
remember him best as he was
acknowledged as "the hest designer preaching, his long scant hair brush-

Original Architectural Concept of Carmel Presbyterian Church

the time of his death at age 39 in 1889.
According to authors Nancy Z.
Tausky and Lynne DiStefano, "The
Hensall church is especially striking
in the extraordinary delicacy of its
details. Mullions divide the windows
into narrow units; the pinnacles have
fine, sharp mouldings; and the
slender lines of the bichromatic
design for a filigree of brick".

the magnetic needle quivers under a

Queensway news
Well, hello everyone! Hope you had
a super Christmas and are looking
forward to ringing in the new year.
Queensway is really looking forward
to the new year with anticipation. But
first we want to share with you *hat
we were up to last week.
Monday afternoon it was time for
Ladies Hour. We I ad a delightful visit
while we enjoyed make-up
makeovers and hand massages. It
was a very relaxing afternoon.
Tuesday morning we got together
and woke up with exercises. Then in
the afternoon Mr. Cowan came over
to lead our Tuesday church service.
Wednesday morning Father
Mooney came to Queensway to hold
communion for our Catholic
residents.
Christmas carolling was the name
of the game on Wednesday afternoon.
With the help of Joyce Pepper we
sang our favourite hymns, and after
we all enjoyed hot chocolate and
Christmas goodies. It was a very
seasonal afternoon to say the least.
Finally that evening, Christmas
Eve, we had the absolute pleasure of
welcoming the Lakeview Conser-
vative Singers. The singers did not
use instrumental accompaniment,
therefore the four-part harmony was
truly beautiful to listen to. At this
time, we would like to thank Mildred
Gingerich and Kim Dobson for help-
ing us serve our lunch for this special
occasion. Thanks ladies.
Before I close, Queensway would
like to welcome Mr. Gord Beierling
into our home.
We hope you have a super and safe
New t'ear's and we'll talk to you next
year!
unusual man as capable of reading 13
languages, and speaking 11.
In startling contrast, the second
minister was apparently more in-
terested in "fast horses" than learn-
ing. In an economy of understate-
ment, one church history comments
that "his was not the happiest
ministry".
The pendulum swung again. The
scholarship and conscientiousness of
the third minister, Rev. R.Y. Thomp-
son, so enlarged the congregation that
the present Carmel Presbyterian
Church was built in 1886.
Other buildings designed by
Durand include the Perth County
building in Stratford, Victoria Hall,
Petrolia, Knox Presbyterian Church
in Listowel and the original Stratford
General Hospital.
Among the London structures are
Endiang, the John Labatt House;
Waverly, the Charles Goodhue House
at 10 Grand Avenue; and the Ben
jamin Cronyn Jr. House which is now
part of Central Baptist.

ty of Toronto Press.
