Technological studies programs
are an important part of the overall
curriculum. For some students,
technical courses provide an incen-
tive to remain in school. For others,
especially those involved in
cooperative education programs that
provide on-the-job work experience,
they present opportunities for future
employment.

A year-long review by the Mid-
dlesex technological studies commit-
tee has resulted in a statement of pur-
pose for technological studies pro-
grams in secondary sctools1'
The review was ordered by the
education ministry after its 1984 revi-
sion in secondary school graduation
requirements brought about a 40 per
cent decline in enrollment in
technologicitl studies programs. The
decline cam' just when business and
industry were seeking well-qualified
tech studies graduates.

The lengthy statement of purpose
produced by the committee and
adopted by the board, reflects the
general goals of education in Ontario,
the specific aims of Technological
Studles,programs, and the needs of
the community.
Don Dool, superintendent of
schools, says that, "by clarifying the
intent of these programs for teachers,
the statement of purpose provides a
frame of reference for planning
courses and using instruction
methods. It . also sets criteria for
evaluating programs."
Each of the five public secondary
schools in Middlesex County is able to
offer technological studies programs
from grade nine throught to grade
twelve. In grades nine and ten, they
offer exploratory programs which let
students sample the work in several

provinoewide 40 per cent. This is still
MO enough % prompt school officials
and employers to work together in an
attempt to reduce the decline rate
even further.
The technological studies review
and the resulting statement of pur-
pose are valuable steps in this pro-
cess. By reaffirming their interest in
and support of technological studies
programs, schools and employers are
providing firm foundations for conti-
nuing development, improvement
and growth of the prpgrams in Mid-
dlesex County secondary schools.

this story to the determination' that
people must have to stand up for the

In part, he said, "one argument
