Lucan Cup will provide good hockey. action this weekend
Off to Switzerland
Only two of the three Stastny brothers remain in the National
Hockey League. They are Peter and Anton with the Quebec
Nordiques.
After being released by the Toronto Maple Leafs the 33 year-old
Marian Stastn Y is playing for the Sierre team in Switzerland. He
scored 23 goals for the Leafs a year ago.
Stastny left his home in Quebec City on November 5 to begin his
new career in Switzerland.
Jacques Lemaire, now the managing director of the Montreal
Canadiens started his coaching career with the same Sierre club.
Foster Wasn't First
Contrary to popular belief, Foster Hewitt was not the first per-
son to do the play-by-play of a hockey game by way of radio.
The first announcer for a hockey game anywhere was Norm
Albert as he described a game from Toronto on February 8, 1923.
The next day, a story in the Toronto Star hailed it as the inaug ral
broadcasting by radio of a hockey game play-by-play. Ironically,
the story was written by a cub reporter by the name of Foster
Hewitt.
Only a month later, Hewitt was at the microphone to describe
a game between Toronto Parkdale and Kitchener of the Ontario
Senior Hockey league and his illustrious career was underway.
The story of Foster Hewitt's life. and his contribution in making
hockey popular from coast to coast is provided in the book, "He
Sports Spotlight
by Ross Haugh
Shoots, He Scores", written by Scott Young.
This book would make an interesting gift for hockey fans of all
ages. u
While talking about gifts under the Christmas tree come the mor-
ning of December 25, how about tickets to the 1987 Exeter Lions
Sportsmen's 'Dinner.
Tickets for the popular February event are now available from
dinner chairman Brian Illman at the Bank of Nova Scotia or any
Lions member. They are $35 for adults and $25 for students and
ehildren. A portion of the cost is tax deductible.
Three of the main speakers already confirmed are Brian Mac-
Farlane and Don Cherry of Hockey Night in Canada fame and
former major league baseball umpire Marty Springstead.
Lucan Cup All Set
Hockey fans in the area looking for some extra hockey action
this coming weekend can do worse than drop into the Lucan Com-
munity Centre for a couple of hours.- •
Lucan Cup chairman Tom Hardy and his hard working commit-
tee have lined up 16 teams from both sides of the border. •
The 1985 champions from Fort Erie will be back to defend their
title and 15 other teams have the same idea in taking home the
first prize of $5,000.
Action gets underway Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Ac-
tion runs from 7 a.m. through to midnight.
Playoff rounds go Sunday morning with finals in the 'A' and `B'
divisions set for late afternoon.
About three years ago, a cyclone division was added to include
area teams. This section has been dropped from the Lucan Cup
competition and will be played on its own in the spring.

had pulled them back to within one

Fred Gregus worked between the

Jeff Redfern had 27 fo I ' chell.
The Exeter Hawks recorded only
one win in four outings this week, but
still managed to hold on to second
place in the northern division of the
Western Junior "D" loop.
However, the Brussels Bulls have
started to run away with top spot as
they now enjoy a six -point lead over
the locals and have a game in hand.
Meanwhile, Seaforth and Mitchell
remain only two points behind Exeter
in third place as they each have 14
points and the Centenaires have a
game in hand. Clinton remains in con-
tention with 11 points.
The Hawks started the week with a
6-5 loss to their namesakes in Mitchell
and continued to have their troubles
at home as they were edged 5-4 by the
Centenaires on Friday. The losing
streak continued on Saturday as the
Mt. Brydges Bulldogs scored a 5-2 win
in their rink.
Exeter picked up their lone triumph

The Mustangs will be back in Ex-
eter this Friday to attempt to avenge
that loss and on Saturday the Hawks
travel to Thedford to face the
Lumberjacks who are starting to
show signs of Life after wallowing in
the southern division basement for
the entire season.
In a Thursday ringette game, the
Huron Park tweens edged Exeter by
a score of 4-3.
Shauna Becker led the Huron Park
scoring with a pair of goals. One came
on an unassisted effort and the other
on a pass from captain Mary Lynn
Dietrich.
The other goals were notched by
Diane McIntyre on a pass from Car-
rie Stuart and Dietrich with passing
help from Becker.
The Exeter goals were fired by Bec-
ci Farquhar, Genelle Charrette and
Bryden Gryseels. Picking up assists
were Barb Mortley, Janet Pappel and
Tonya Riehl.

Double Mustangs
In breaking their three -game losing
streak at home, Sunday, the Hawks
jumped into a 2-0 lead 1n the first 10
minutes of the game and were never
headed as they doubled the score on
the Mustangs.
Jeff Dalrymple, Dan Nairn, Mark
Morrissey and Steve Gould fired the
successful shots for the locals with
assists going to Nairn, Jeff Ansems,
Steve Batten and goaltender Derek
Switzer.
Switzer recorded 22 saves to pick up
the win, while Derrick Gilders made
17 saves in the low -scoring contest.
The game was tame until the final
minutes when two fights broke out
with Go111d and Batten both picking
up fighting majors and game miscon-
ducts. The former had two of each of one as each capitalized on one
plus a two -minute aggressor penalty powerplay opportunity, and Seaforth
that left the locals playing a man took a 3-2 margin in the second with

The Hawks pulled to within two

game, but the Bulldogs got that one
back in quick order to quell any fur-
ther rally.
Steve Gould and George Pratt were
the Exeter marksmen with Pratt, Jeff
Pfaff and Jeff Reid picking up single
assists.
The Hawks hurt their offensive
chances as they sat out 18 minor
nalties.
Edged by Centennaires
The home ice woes for the Hawks
continued on Friday when they drop-
ped a 4-3 decision to Seaforth.
Although they enjoyed a nine -shot
advantage in the contest, the Hawks'
couldn't find the range on some good
sco ing opportunities against the
short-handed visitors who had only 12
skaters.
The teams were tied 2-2 at the end
