Tories eat corn
race squirrels
Saturdays come -and Saturdays go,
but Saturday September 13 was one
day that John and Marie May won't
forget for a while. That was the day
of the Terry Clifford corn roast, - or
as it was billed "the corn cob - Hob
Knob".
The day started early for John and
Marie when John started husking
corn. This is the corn that the faithful
few went half way to Brantford to
pick in the rain on Friday.- The
huskers started to gather at the May
• house around 9 a.m. and by 11 a.m.
the husking crew was in high gear.
They did a very good job on about
24 bushel's of some good looking cobs.
George May, Randy Clark, Paul
Bestard and their husky entourage of
happy helpers were in charge -of the
cooking kettle. This is a contraption
that one might see in an old movie
from South Africa where the natives
were about to boil a missionary.
The boys had the fire going under
the big kettle by 3 p.m. and the first
corn was ready to be served to the
crowd by 4:30 p.m. There seemed- to
be willing workers every where --
some were in charge,of the hot dogs,
some the coffee urns, some the ice
cream bars, some the refreshment
booth and some just cleaning the
grounds to keep every thing ship
shape. In the midst of all this was
Marie May keeing an eye on every
one to make sure things went
smoothly.
Mark Laidlaw and his wife Gloria
were in charge of the registration.
(Heri Bradish and Todd Younker
were selling tickets to the golf tour-
nament to be held at Fair Villa Golf
Course at Nilestown on September 24.
If you are reading this paper at lunch
time you are %till in time to get down
to the golf course and register for the
tee off from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
As most of you will have heard by
now the squirrel race was a bit of a
disappointment, in the fact there was
only one entry. John May had gone to
some considerable expense to secure
a bit of good squirrel stock right out
of England. In fact the cage that held
this little fellow had the "Sold to John
May, Arva Canada' sign still on the
top. John had this bushy little fellow
all slicked up for the occasion.
Hill Stewart had a notable entry for
the event, but he was plagued with
bad luck when he slid down the drain
in the laundry tub just as Edyth
finished giving him his bath," "it was
the squirrel that slid away, not Bill,"
it wasn't even Bill that Edyth was
bathing, I hope I have made that clear
to everyone.
Bryan and Beth Smith's entry
under the capable handling of
daughter Heather looked like he could
have been in the money, but as things
turned out Butterscotch "the cat"
made short work of this entry. Can
you just imagine a butterscotch squir-
rel? It sounds like a new kind of
peanut butter.
With the loss of these two entries
the crowd had to settle for a time
trial, or a race against the clock.
Bran Smith released the squirrel
after some difficulty with the starting
gate. This brave little animal made
a very courageous effort to get to the
woods in record time, even though he
climbed up the legs of three picnic
tables and two Spectators on the way
to the woods.
The overflow crowd, which
represented people from all over the
riding sure got their money's worth.
They consumed great amounts of
sweet corn, steaming hot dogs with all
the trimmings, and ice cream bars
for desert. Some people were seen at
the ice cream freezer three times. I
must tell you that the visiting
member from Lambton-Middlesex
went home to his riding just chucked
full of all these goodies. Jim Jepson
and his wife had another dinner to at-
tend that evening so they went quite
light on our offering. After all who
wants to fill up on hot dogs when you
are about to sit down to a surf and turf
meal later on.
Terry and Ann Clifford were just
their natural selves: They are extra -
good at mingling with the crowd and
making every one feel like a special
friend. Terry sometimes gets carried
away a wee bit when he sets his
camera down some place and Ann
has to find it for him. Fear not Terry,
it can anddoes happen to most of us.
The medical journals refer to it as
aging.
The executive along with Terry and
Ann would like to give special thanks
to all the volutneers who helped in so
ttany ways with so many jobs. Also
a very special thank you must go out
to all you brave people who came out
in the cold to this party to have some
fun, food, and friendships. You are the
people that made this event such a
success. Without you it would have
been a corn roast, but with you in at-
tendance it was a first class feast. The
most special thank you of all must go
to the May family for the use of their
property and all the extra work that
was created by being there. Thanks
to each and every one of you for
another successful party.
1 know 1 have missed thanking
some of you, but I suffer from the
same afflication as our member. --
