Oh, for the life of a dog
Seems to me a dog's life isn't so bad
after all. Our big, old black mutt has
just come home from one of his many
holidays. Sometimes, we think he's
gone for good but, then, he comes
ambling up the driveway, complete-
ly oblivious to our worry, and wonder-
ing what all the fuss is about. After
all, he reasons with us, if you can go
away and leave me by myself,
sometimes, why can't 1 do the same
with you?
This is the old oaf who, in the
winter, refuses to be booted out in the
snow more than once a day, who
stretches his four and a half foot
length in the middle of the kitchen,
soaking up the heat from the stove
and tripping everyone who passes by.
But when winter is gone and the first
scent of spring is on the air, his nose
twitches and his eyes brighten as he
stretches and lolls out the door to roll
on the grass, groaning ectastically.
He doesn't come into the house again
until the wintery blasts return in
November.
It takes awhile for him to get his
walking legs again after the long
winter, but in a few days he's acting
like a fairly normal dog, barking at
strangers, stalking the odd unsuspec-
ting rabbit and chasing seagulls along
the beach. Then, the summer people
start returning to their cottages and
Mobie puts on a new hat... an official
one -dog welcoming committee to
greet all the cottagers for another
season. n r some Imes, i e • opens
to slip up they're very disappointed.
This year, two families came looking
for him complaining that he hadn't
been there to welcome them and
wondering why he had fallen down on
the job. We tried to explain that he
was just a little behind in his rounds
and that we were sure he'd get around
to them as soon as possible.
Another day, I met a lady at the
corner store and was explaining to -
her just where I lived. "Oh," she ex-
claimed excitedly, "You must be
Mobie's mother. I'm delighted to
meet my good friend's mother."
(Hmmmmm. )
It does seem that he's on intimate
•
is interesting, to say the least. The
other night we were awakened at
midnight by a loud pounding. When
my husband staggered to the front
door, the conversation went like this:
Voice in the darkness : "Do you own
a big black dog?"
It Seems to me...
terms with most of the population up
and down the beach, although I'm
sure there are some who wish he
wasn't so friendly. The trouble is that
he gets spoiled wicked, and he's come
home on more than one occasidn with
a note attached to his collar which
says something like this, "Hope you
don't mind that I fed your dog a steak
and potatoes for supper," ( just when
we've settled for bacon and eggs,
ourselves). It's not much wonder he
turns up his nose at the kibble in his
dish.
He's often prone to sleep at some of
his favorite places and, occassional-
ly, settles in for two or three days.
Just now, he's nonchalantly walked in
from one of these short holidays look -
ing extremely well fed and wonderful-
ly refreshed.
Once in a while, however, someone
arrives on the beach who hasn't met
him before and the first confrontation

Art (yawning): "Uh, yes we do."
Voice: "Well, he's in our livingroom
and he won't get out!"
Art ( brightening somewhat ) : How
in the world did he get in your
livingroom?"
Voice: "Well, the door was open
and he walked in."
Art: "Have you told him to leave?"
Voice: "Yes, but he won't."
Art: "Have you tried pushing him :
out?"
Voice: "No way!"
Art: "Have you tried pulling on his
collar and dragging him out?"
Voice: "Are you kidding?!"
Finally, Art was able to convince
the Voice that despite his great size,
Mobie was as gentle as a lamb and
would never dream of biting off his
leg. So, rather reluctantly, the Voice
faded off into the night to try to,
somehow or other, persuade Mobie
that he wasn't welcome.
That would come as a great shock
to Mobie because he's one of those
rare Creatures who firmly believes
that everybody loves him. (We
suspect the Voice was renting a cot-
tage from one of Mobie's friends and
,---when he saw the door open he just
naturally walked in, which, we
gathered from the Voice, caused
more than a little excitement! )
Anyway, I guess they were suc-
cessful in their persuasion (gentle or
otherwise) because, later in the night,
I heard a very disgruntled grunt as
Mobie climbed up on the new cover on
the porch swing to stretch out and
finish the night there. Talk about a
dog's life!
