'Auctioneer Johh Finlay 236-4814 ' i of- i0t 19 • Fireworks attract huge GB audience Canada Day fireworks on the beach at Grand Bend drew a huge crowd. With blankets, picnic suppers, snacks of french fries and soft drinks. Kids of all ages thronged to the main beach to enjoy a fireworks display, spon- sored by the GB and Area Chamber of Commerce, that has gained a reputation as "the best" for miles around. The crowd spread all the way to Oakwood, but concentrated mostly at the foot of main street. They sat on top of cars in both parking lots, filled the turnaround circle, lined every curb and stone fence, four or five lines deep on the sloping grass of beachfront pro- perty on Government Rd. and out on- to the pier. Some enterprising types fashioned themselves reclining armchairs by digging a trough in the sand then lin- ing it with a blanket so they could lie back to witness the spectacle in the sky without getting a stiff neck. Vying for attention in the beautiful sight category, about 125 boats of all shapes and sizes with running lights twinkling and reflecting in the calm water, anchored off the shoreline for a grandstand view. While waiting for complete darkness several boats pro- vided their own impromptu fireworks displays of sparklers. Receiving a government grant to partially help defray costs, the Chamber voted to hold the display on July 1 rather than on the holiday weekend itself. They were right. The day was hot and sultry, the crowds headed to the beach for the day, and Reeve Harold Green was heard to declare in passing, that he had pass- ed a bylaw that the rain would hold off until after midnight. Starting in early evening, Gene Grenier of Rollies Sports began to build up and set the display. Gene is responsible for the choices and pac- ing of the works according to colour and type. However it requires a team of about 20 people at the time of fir- ing, to keep the show on schedule. About half of the display is set up to be electrically controlled. There is a great deal of thought and research behind the scene of this 20 minute, $5,000.00 extravaganza. As the crowd wended its way slow- ly up the main street one delighted patron was heard to remark "Gee, that was great! The only thing miss- ing was playing 0 Canada over the P.A. system." * Filson & Robson * COMING AUCTIONS * July 9 Antique and 4t * household, Est. B.
