Mark and Mary Theresa Denomme and two children from Kitchener, and Mary -Ann Dumouchelle and tw 1 ids of Belle River spent the ho ' y weekend with their parents, Be • nd John Denomme at v u aders write To the Editor: Due to the surge in publicity for organizations and issues connected with drinking and driving, and in this season of graduation parties, TOC ALPHA, a youth organization with 600 members in Ontario, has developed its own position on this issuer.-) We commend groups which have initiated ways of preventing the con- sequences of drinking and driving, ie buses hired for graduations, designated driver programmes and parent/student drinking/driving con- tracts. These measures are making a difference; most importantly they are saving lives. However, these are safeguard measures only and -the underlying issue of teen-age drinking is not being questioned. For all these good inten- tions it still must be recognized that underaged drinking is illegal. liv removing the consequences a teen ager must face when drinking, adult' leaders may be giving a uncssage that they sanction teen-age drinking, or that any amount of-drin is accep table as long as you sta off the roads. TOC ALPHA believes that drink ing/driving contracts and other safe ty measures are a means of opening up channels of communication bet ween teens and adults with regard to drinking and driving. We feel that the real problem is not just drinking and driving, but in the decision making process involved in drinking behaviour. Yours sincerely.
