east from Lake Huron to Arthur. The
Town of Kincardine was chosen as the
site of the first combined Sportsfest
in 1977, with approximately 1,300 par-
ticipants involved in 15 events.
'fhe torch was passed to Port Elgin
for the 1978 Sportsfest, and since then
it has been held in ListoWel, Goderich,
Owen Sound, Hanover, Seaforth, Kin-
cardine and Exeter. Sportsfest '84, in
Kincardine, was the biggest event
with some 3,500 participants.
Organizers for this year's event hope
to top the 4,000 mark in participation.
Since it is the 10th anniversary of
the event, the organizers of Sportsfest
'86 are planning to make it the biggest
and best yet. Plans currently call for
a list of 39 events, including ladies'
softball and slow -pitch, men's slow -
pitch, youth soccer, men's and junior
boy's basketball, curling, darts,
chess, euchre, bridge, shuffleboard,
long distance swim, minor softball,
children's T -ball, bowling, racquet-
ball, squash, boardsailing, soapbox
derby, team aerobics, water polo,
women's soccer,.canoe race, karate,
junior golf, ball hockey, badminton,
10 km run, beach volleyball, tennis,
swim meet, table tennis, oldtimers'
soccer, mini golf, horseshoes, bike
rodeo, fun run, lawn bowling, and a
mini triathlon.
As you can see from the aforemen-
tioned list of events, the organizers
have something of interest for just
about everyone, which is why this
year's logo includes the phrase, "All
Sorts of Sports for Sports Of All
Sorts."
A highlight of any Sportsfest
weekend is the traditional Saturday
evening dance, which this year will
take the form of a giant beach party
on Port Elgin's main beach. Camping
facilities are also available for those
wishing to stay the entire weekend in
Port Elgin.
Sportsfest entry packages are now
available at the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre. The deadline for entries this year
is Friday, July 18, and there will be
no extensions to that deadline.
Sportsfest relies on the participa-
tion of all to achieve success. Mark
August 15, 16 and 17 on your calendar
and help.make the 10th annual Sport-
sfest the best yet.

To -extend deer hunt
The success of the selective harvest
program introduced in 1980 has allow-
ed the Ministry of Natural Resources
to extend the 1986 deer hunting season
in several areas in Ontario.
"The positive impact of our selec-
tive deer harvest program, coupled
with telajtively mild winters in recent
years, has allowed Ontario's deer
population to double within the last
six years to an estimated herd of
200,000," said Natural Resources
Minister Vincent Kerrio.
"The extended hunting season will
allow more recreational opportunities
for hunters in the coming season, as
well as reducing problems caused by
deer --such as crop damage and deer -
car collisions."
The following Wildlife Management
Units (WMUs) in the Algonquin
region will have new archery
seasons: 48, 57, 58, 59 and 60A.
Anyone wishing to hunt antlerless
deer in 1986 must purchase a deer
licence --available in early June --and
then correctly complete and return
the attached antlerless deer tag ap-
plication to local Ministry district of-
fices or to the address on the applica-
tion by no later than 5 p.m., July 31.
Those who wish to hunt in controll-
ed deer hunt areas should contact the
district office in the area of interest
for information and application
forms. Applications must be sent to
the MNR district office which cor-
responds to your first WMU choice.
Cut-off date is 5 p.m., August 29.
