Old musical lifts you to heaven
Back in our younger days, my hus-
band, Art, and I were inveterate
movie goers. He started enjoying the
' ig screen' long before me, when as
a little boy in Toronto, he regularly
sat through the Saturday matinees for
a nickle. He still remembers all the
stars from that long ago time.
It was different for me growing up
in Saskatchewan where the nearest
theatre was many miles away. In
fact, I think I must have been 11 or 12
before I saw my first bonafide motion
picture. However, once living in On-
tario, I soon joined the throngs that
filled the theatres. Since there was no
television to keep people at home,
most of us sauntered to the local
movie houses for our entertainment.
We're now fans of 'Magic Shadows,'
Elwy Yost's program on T.V.O.,
which features many of the old
movies we saw as youngsters. It's
true some of them seem stilted with
language that almost embarrassing-
ly strange, but many of them remain
classics, and it's wonderful to see ac-
tors and actresses we once almost
idolized, come alive on the screen just
as young and beautiful as ever!
During the '40s, the big movie
makers in Hollywood turned out what
they called morale boosters, which
were supposed to take your minds off

the war and lift our spirits. They were
very successful, both in the manner
in which they were produced and in
the way they entertained. Many of
these movies were musical ex-
travaganzas employing big names,
huge sets and fantastic costumes.
They were so successful financial -
marvellous, but the one I remember
best was Carousel, with its heart ren-
ding love story. Gordon McCrae and
Shirley Jones starred in it as Billy
Bigalow and Julie Jordon, and they
and the rest of the cast held us spell-
bound for three hours.

ly that the trend to big musicals car-
ried on several years after the war,
and the men who composed the words
and music.... Rodgers and Hart,
Oscar Hammerstein, Loewe and
Lerner (and many others) became
household names. Their music was
hummed and sung everywhere!
The first really -extravaganza was
Oklahoma!, but it was followed by
many others such as South Pacific,
Brigadoon, and Finnegan's Rainbow,
to name only three. They were all
'we watched poor Billy Bigalow, a
born loser, fall in love with sweet,,'
Julie Jordan, and struggle and fail
miserably in his role as a husband.
Only after his sad demise, when he
had passed on 'Over There' was he
able to do anything good for the wife
and daughter he left behind.
Last night we went to Huron Coun-
try Playhouse at Grand Bend to at-
tend the performance of Carousel on
the stage. It transported us back 40
years to the dark little theatre on
Main Street in Exeter where we had
first seen the show. The words and
songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein
were still as lilting and haunting as
before.' The lumps that r'ose in our

of the corners of our eyes were just
the same too. As I struggled to keep
my own sobs quiet, I heard Art
swallowing hard and trying to clear
his throat.
Of course, some critics will tell us
it's too sentimental, that the show has
nothing to say to us in this hard nos-
ed day and age. But they'll be wrong.
Because, it seems to me, a tittle sen-
timentality is good for us. It peels off
the hard crusts and softens us up to
make us remember that we do have
hearts, after all. And surely it can't
be a bad thing to watch a show that
tells us that no matter how dark
things look there's always hope.
In an old movie we saw recently on
Magic Shadows, the heroine, Betty
Grable, says, "You can't live without
hope." The anti-hero, the hard guy,
replies, "Believe me, Lady, you
can!
Unfortunately, I thinkmany people
do live without hope, today and that's
bad. I know a show like Carousel is
not the magic answer, but it seems to
me, that like in the last war, we still
need entertainment that lifts our
spirits and souls, at least once in a
while. In my opinion, there's too much
on the stage, these days, that's sordid
and crass ... theatre that leaves us
feeling like we've been dragged
through the gutter.
Carousel, on the other hand, literal-
ly lifts you to the heavenlies.
