IN MBMORIAM --
FRAYNE — In being memory of a dear
husband, father and VanNather, George,
who left us so Ituddm six years ago, April
1, 1988.
As time unfolds another Year.
Memories keep him ever near,
Silent thoughts of times together,
Hord memories that will bast forever.
Sadly (sued and always remembered
by wife Ella and family. 14'
LEWIS— Inlovingmemoryofadear
brother and uncle, Elmer, who passed
away March 31, 1990.
Parting comes and hearts are broken
A loved one leaves with words unspoken
With tender love and deep regret
We who loved him will never forget.
Always remembered and sadly missed
by all his family. 14'
VANDERWIEL — In loving memory of a
dear son and brother, Gerard, who passed
away 11 years ago, April 6, 1975.
To a beautiful life came a sudden end,
He died as he lived, everyone's friend.
He was always thoughtful, loving and kind,
What a wocndeerful memory he left behind.
He left so suddenly, his thoughts unknown,
But he left a memory we are proud to own.
Treasure him, God, in your garden of rest,
For in this world, he was one of the best.
Sadly missed and always loved and
remembered by mom, dad, brothers,
sisters and in-laws. . 14'
question attending conventions
Attendance ateotvettiore and con-
ferences led to an udscheduled but
spirited discussion at the March 27
meeting of Huron County Council.
After considerable exchange of views
and some confusion over a motion,
the subject was referred to the ex,
ecutive committee for consideration
and recommendation back to the
council for a policy decision.
The controversy seemed to grow
out of a recommendation in the mon-
thly report of the road committee.
The county engineer requested per-
mission to aUend the National' Road
and Street Maintenance Conference
in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 20 to 23,
instead of the Canadian Public Works
Conference in Ottawa approved at a
previous meeting.
The approximate cost of $600. was
said to be the same, but Bob Demp-
sey, the county engineer, indicated
that judging by the known agenda, the
topics to be handled at the Nevada
conference might be more beneficial
than the Ottawa conference agenda.
Dempsey added that he understands
that there will be some concern.
The road committee recommended
to the council that the county engineer
be authorized to attend the Las Vegas -
conference. Observing that in his opi-
nion there is "a little too much going
to conventions outside the province",
Goderich Reeve Harry Worsell ask-
ed for a recorded vote. The motion
was carried by 17 votes in favour and
11 opposing the engineer's Las Vegas
attendance.
Voting in favour of the motion were
these members: Warden Leona Arm-
strong (Reeve of Grey Township),
Reeve William Bennett of Seaforth;
Reeve Tom Cunningham (Nutlet) ;
Deputy Reeve Claire Deichert (Hay) ;
Reeve Robert Fisher (Zurich) ; Reeve
Marie Bicknell (McKillop), Reeve
David Johnston (Hayfield); Reeve
Russel Kernlghan (Colborne) ; Reeve
Bruce Machan (Wingllam) ; Reeve
Brian McBurney (Turnberry); Depu-
ty Reeve Ken McCann (Stephen);
Reeve Ernest Snell (East
Wawanosh); Reeve Grant Stirling
(Goderich Township); Reeve Tom
Tomes (Stephen), and Reeve Albert
Wasson of Blyth.
Members opposing the Las Vegas
trip were: Reeve James Aitchison
(West Wawanosh) ; Deputy Reeve
Laurie Cox (Goderich Township);
Reeve Gerald D'Arcey (Howick);
Deputy Reeve John Doherty (Town of
Goderich; Reeve Doug Fraser (Mor-
ris) ; Deputy Reeve Lossy Fuller (Ex-
eter) ; Reeve Allan Gibson
(Ashfield) ; Reeve Bill Mickle (Ex-
eter); Reeve Jim Robinson (Hen-
sall); Reeve Harry Worsen (Town of
Goderich) with two votes.
Absent from the meeting were:
Reeve Robert Bell (Tuckersmith);
Reeve Bee Cooke (Minton); Reeve
Hank TenPas (Br 1- els) and Reeve
Lionel Wilder ( ay Township).
Later durin the council meeting a
recomme s : ion originated from the
planning a'' development commit-
tee, to au t rize Warden Leona Arm-
strong and planning director Gary
Davidson to attend the conference of
Canadian Institute of Planners in
Vancouver from July 20-23. The mo-
tion passed in a show -of -hands -vote.
Reeve Mickle, estimating that con-
vention and related expenses cost
Huron County taxpayers "8100,000 or
more annually", then presented a mo-
tion, seconded by Reeve Worsell, call-
ing for a by-law or policy restricting
attendances. The motion was
defeated.
Reeve Mickle's subsequent motion,
seconded by Reeve Tomes, referred
the entire subject of convention atten-
dances and expenses to the executive
committee for review and recommen-
dation at a later date. This motion
was carried by majority vote. The
matter will return to the council table
for a debate and decision.
