In a departure from traditional
rivalries, Brian O'Malley, President
and Chief Executive of Standard
Trust has endorsed the principle of co-
insurance for deposits that has been
proposed by the Canadian Banker's
Association.
He told the company's annual
general meeting that co-insurance
was necessary to ensure large
depositors accept some of the risk and
responsibility for the investment of
their funds.
O'Malley, however, proposed a dif-
ferent method of implementing the
principle than that recommended by
the Bankers' Association.
"The present level of insu ance for
the first $60,000 of deposits must be
maintained," he said. "The next
$60,000 of deposits should be co-
insured on the basis that 75 percent of
the risk be accepted by the Canada
Deposit Insurance Corporation and 25
percent by the depositors."
O'Malley warned the government
of dangerous consequences with the
very largest financial institutions,"
he told shareholders in the Ontario
Room of L'Hotel in Toronto. "The
consequence would be inefficiencies
and high costs associated with reduc-
ed competition." -
O'Malley made these remarks in a
summary of Standard Trust's record
performance during a year of
upheaval in the financial sector.
The company's net income in 1985
rose to $6,770,000 from $4,621,000 in
1989 and earnings per share rose 52
percent. Earnings in 1986 are forecast
to grow by a further 10 percent to 20
percent.
1986 will also rank as the eleventh
consecutive year that dividends were
increased. O'Malley announced an in-
crease in the dividend to $0.45 a share
payable on April 15 to shareholders of
,record on April 2.

The Huron -Perth County Roman
Catholic Separate School Board
agreed Monday at a meeting in
Dublin to start a program on the
prevention of sexual abuse in its 19
schools in the two counties, limiting
it to children in Kindergarten through
Grade 6. Theresa Bowins, religion
consultant and family life resource,
informed the board she has learned
that sexual child abuse can be and is
a problem in Huron andirerth as in
other jurisdictions. She stated it is ab-
solutely necessary that it must be a
community effort, involving parents,
teachers, social workers, police and
clergy to help the child effectively
combat child abuse.
The program material is called
Feeling Yes and Feeling No. It con-
sists of videptapes designed for adults
and children and program material
which will give the children the tools
to protect themselves. Miss Bowins
pointed out that one in three girls and
one in five boys experience some
form of sexual abuse before the age
of 18. Parents of students in Huron
and Perth -Counties will be invited to
a meeting to discuss the issue and to
review the program materials before
they are implemented in the schools.
