VCW meets
at Woodham

Lent was the theme of the
Woodham U.C.W. meeting held on
Tuesday evening March 11 in the
church basement with Group 1 in
charge. Mrs. Ted Insley played quiet
music before the meeting. Mrs. David
Wheeler opened the worship service
with a reading about Lent followed by
prayer. The Scripture Mark II, verses
1 to 10 was read by Mrs. Reg McCur-
dy... followed by the hymn Hosanna
Loud Hosanna.
A film strip The Water a symbol of
Cleansing, Preparation and
Righteousness was shown. Mrs. Ross
McCurdy gave a reading "This is
Lent" followed by the hymn "Sweet
Moments". Mrs. Fred Parkinson
gave a reading "Lent and Easter"
followed by a film strip "The Cross"
symbol of Forgiveness.
A short reading on Lent by Mrs.
David Wheeler closed the worship
service. Mis. Wheeler announced she
had a travelling library from the
Resource Center and anyone is
welcome to take books home to read.
Mrs. John Vardy gave an in-
teresting talk on the Study book tell-
ing of Mr. Stan McKay who lived on
a reserve and later became ordained
as a United Church minister. Mrs.
Fred Parkinson gave a short talk on
Faith in Action which replaces the
Live Love Project. The offering was
taken.
Miss Jean Copeland opened the
business with a poem "Life Is A
Game." The roll call was taken and
the minutes of the previous meeting
read. Mrs. Ross McCurdy reminded
everyone of the bale for April. •The
correspondence was --read. We will
send a donation to Camp Bimini and
cater to a wedding in September.

Cromarty group plays crokinole

Wednesday evening the Marian Rit-
chie Evening 'Auxiliary were
hostesses for the annual crokinole
social in the bsaement of the church.
About 40 men, women and children
enjoyed an evening of crokinole and
other games.
Mervin Dow, Christopher Scott,
Sarah Elliott, and Pearl James won
first and second prizes for the men
and ladies respectively, and Amy
Hodgert had the lucky Easter egg
prize. Winner of the lucky coffee cup
was Hazel Harburn.
The first Cromarty Boy Scout group
committee held their March meeting
at the home of Ruth Laing with an at-
tendance of eight. Upcoming events
for the boys include the Beaveree in
Dublin May 31, Bottle Drive on April
12 Cub Car Rally April 19, a Wildwood
outing for cubs April 26, speakers at
cub meetings on trees, airplanes, and
council. Scouts have a floor hockey
tournament on April 5.
One new Scout leader will be need-
ed for next year. There are now
enough boys in the scout troop to re-
quire three leaders. The annual
meeting of Perth District Council will
be held in Seaforth on April 18.
Doris Miller presided for the March
meeting of the Marian Ritchie Even-
ing Auxiliary at the home of Ruth La-
ing, and opened the. worship service
with.a poem, The Miracle of Spring.
Roberta Templeman read the
scripture on the story of the Good
Samaritan and the meditation, God Is
a Story -teller.
Eight members answered the roll
call bynaming a Canadian Indian
tribe. or the topic, Ruth Laing read
two stories from western People, the
first an account of a July 1st fireworks
display put on by the people of Ed-
monton for themselves and a settle-
ment of Cree Indians, and the second,
the story of Pete Standing Alone, of
the Blood Reserve in southern
Alberta.
Alice Gardiner was in charge of the
study on the effects that education has
on the Indian people - the lack of
understanding of their desire to study
the Indian history and culture, their
need and ability to take advanced
education in modern technology, etc.
She was assisted by Mary Elliott, Bet-
ty Lou Norris, Hazel Harburn, Rober-
ta Templeman and Ruth Laing..
Congratulations to Jennifer Cronin
who has been successful in passing
her second figure in figure skating,
also the European Waltz, the Fox Trot
dances. Jennifer skates out of the Ex-
eter Figure Skating Club and plans to
start the spring skating sessions in the
Ilderton club in April.
Tom Laing, who won four free
tickets to a Maple Leaf hockey game
in Toronto at the Brodhagen
Snowmobile Rally, attended Monday
night's game, accompanied by Den-
nis Elliott of Staffa, and Alex and
Scott Zimmer, Stratford.

attended, March 17, with prizes going
to High score- Mary Kooy and Charlie
Rollings; • Lone hands- Helen
McDonald and George Cunningham
and Low score- Gayle Cronyn and
Grace Dixon (playing a man's card.
Lucky numbers went to Eilene
Pullman and Don Fahner. Next com-
mittee for March 31 will be Charlie
and Freda Rollings and Joe and
Margaret Carter.
Personals
Jack and Marg Patterson have ar-
rived home from the sunny south
where they have spent the winter.
They report a very enjoyable
vacation.
Quite a number from the village
and locality attended the Oddfellows
Friendship night banquet and dance
in Exeter Legion, Saturday evening.
Tom and Mary Kooy visited with
Mr. and Mrs. Percy Noels in Exeter,
Sunday evening.
The sympathy of the community is
extended to Mrs. Von Overholt and
family in the death of Von's brother,
the late Frank Maloney of Cambridge
