Times-Advocate, 1986-03-12, Page 16Pogo 4A ,:. .14 rr. Times -Advocate, March 12, 1966 '' Playoffs are new .season, short for some teams When playoffs roll around in sports, they are sometimes refer- red to as the beginning of a new season. Playoffs are the chance of all qualifying teams to forget the er- rors and sins of the just concluded regular schedule and an oppor- tunity to redeem themselves. There are not many situations in life where an individual has a chance for a bigger award, but, certainly hockey is one of these. On the other side of the ledger, teams winning league champion- ships are certainly not sure of winning the playoffs. This year's edition of the Lucan Irish is a prime example of what can happen in playoffs. After leading their division for most of the year, the Irish were eliminated by the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs. The turning point for the Lucan Club came in the sixth game when they blew an early third period 7-2 lead and lost in overtime. For the teams knocked out of playoffs early or not qualifying at all, maybe there should also be a second season, possibly in con- solation playoffs. In contrast to most of our United States neighbours who can switch quickly to basketball or baseball, our hockeyists have to wait about two months for spring and summer sports. Larger Ice Surfaces? NHL linesman Will Norris raises an interesting subject in a re- cent issue of the OHA Hockey News. Norris suggests larger ice surfaces would speed up today's game and the majority of fights would beiellminated• He says hockey has changed considerably in the last 12 years. Players are bigger and faster skaters and lighter and more pro- tective equipment helps in this regard. With bigger and faster players playing on the same size of ice Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh surface, naturally bodies bump and collide with each other and sticks come up resulting in numerous fights. Interesting Predictions We recently acquired a copy of Bill Mazeroski's Baseball '86 magazine which includes his selections for the upcoming major league baseball season, We like the former Pittsburgh Pirate's picks based on his talent quotient system. The selections are based on grading at each posi- tion including front office and field management. New Hamburg . will be here t In the American league east, Mazeroski has the Blue Jays at 41, the Tiger; at 39, the Yankees with 37.5 and Roston Red SOx at 35.A. In the west it's Kansas City at 39.5, Minnesota 33 and California ' and Oakland tied at 32.5. The New York Mets are tops in the National east with 41 follow- ed by the Cards at 40, Chicago Cubs 36.5 and the Expos and rthils all even at 33.5. In the NL west it's Cincinatti with 40, the Dodgers 39.5, San Dego 36 and Houston and Atlanta at 33. While we like the Jays to repeat in the AL east it should be men- tioned, a pennant winner in this division has not been able to come back since the 1980-81 Yankees did the trick. This proves there are no dynasties. Only targets to ainilkt.
