Carolyn Madill, co-ordinator of
Women Power, a career counselling
agdacy for waren, and Susan Booth,
vocational counsellor formerly with
Fanshawe College's pre -trades pro-
gram for women, presented a
limitless vista to the students who at-
tended the Wednesday morning
Awareness week session in the
SHDHS lib ary.
"You are a unique generation, and
the first of your kind, because of the
changes made in technology," Booth
said.
Noting that in the Past a glrivis en-

said girls now in high school can ex-
pect to have as many as 10 career
changes during the course of a poten-
tial 45 -year working life.
Carolyn Madill told the students
they should not expect to make career
decisions now for their entire future.

"Be supportive of yourself as you
move in a new direction," Madill
advised.
The women showed a film called
"Breaking Through" on Fanshawe's
pre -trade training program. The film,
based on the theme "skills In the
trades are learned, not genetic,"
showed women from 17 to 55 training
to be welders, carpenters, auto

won the best actress award. Karen
Schade was given a special award for
best overall performance. and Mark
Penhale was named best supporting`

Both young actresses intend to fur-

not be their last time behind the
footlights.
Blizzard a blesslng
Friday's blizzard may have been a
blessing in disguise for the SHDHS
students who planned a weekend con-
ference to deal with women's issues.
While the blizzard forced cancella-
tion of the event, the students learn-
ed on Friday that an $8,000 grant from
the secretary of state had been
reinstated for the event.
That means the girls will be able to
reschedule the conference in keeping
with their original plans, rather than
the scaled-down version they had
been forced to accept after they
received word two weeks ago that the
grant would not be forthcoming.
The girls had planned to proceed on
a smaller scale and had raised about
$500 in donations from area
businesses and individuals towards
some of the expenses after the grant
was frozen. Exeter council approved
a donation of $150,,for the event.
The conference, which is to deal
with issues such as sexuality, rela-
tionships and careers, has been
rescheduled for some time in April
and the organizers hope that the list
of speakers and other arrangements
originally made will fall into place.

In the well attended afternoon ses-

management, competitiveness and
keeping winn,pg or losing in proper
perspective-- are also the qualities
which contribute to successs in other
fields.
Garay, the daughter of Olympic
gold_ medallist swimmers who com--
peiedfor'Hungary and later defected,
Bald she was born and bred to be an
athlete. She was pictured age day-old
baby in the Toronto Star over the cap-
tion "Canada's future. swimming
champion".
Garay listed the sacrifices that had
her from training three times
at age six to being Canadian
swiga<,champion on Canada's national
team at 14 and competing in the 1978
CoMMonwealth Games In Edmonton.
She also acknowledged the disap-
pointments, like missing a place on.
the 1978 Olympic team by five -one -
hundredths of a second, and missing
again when then Prime Minister Joe
Clark decided no Canadians would
co[rlpete In the 1980 Olympics in
Moscow to show Canada's disap-
proval of the Russian invasion of
Afghanistan.
Garay also depicted the other side-
• theindescribable feeling of marching
Into a stadium to the sound of one's
national anthem and hearing 75,000
people on their feet cheering you,
travelling all over the world, meeting
the Royal Family, and making some
"fantastic friends".
Defining a winner as anyone who
sets a goal and achieves it, she said
being a top athlete was hard work, but
she has no regrets. '
