Times-Advocate, 1985-06-26, Page 11Wallace announces retirement from Blue Water board Dr. Charles Wallace, a charter member of the Blue Water Rest Home board of directors, announced his resignation after a two -decade tenure at the board's 20th annual meeting. held on June 18 in (he Home's dining room. Michael O'Con- nor was acclaimed to replace him as the Zurich and District Chamber of Commerce's representative. Wallace presented his chairman's' and medical director's reports. leavening dry facts with dollops of droll humour. Wallace termed the past year a good one from a medical point of view. He pointed out no deaths occurred in a six-month period, which speaks for itself when considering that the average age of residents is 85. Wallace attributed residents' well- being to a careful and cotscientious nursing staff. He said the adjuvant program had been very successful by encourageing both physical and men- tal activity among the residents. -Wallace singled out the new com- prehensive charting system as an ex- ample of recent innovation. He noted charting was becoming as important as care, and remarked jokinglyihat some hospitals seemed to give top priority to the former, as far as'he cele make out. Terning to the administrative side. Wallace meptioned the smooth passage of the union agreement, com- mending the staff for their reasonableness. (A collective agree- ment reached at the July 17. 1984 board of management meeting stipulated a maximum increase of 40 cents per hour or five percent for those eligible for the two-year wage scale. Non-union staff, supervisors and part-time staff received a 40 cent per hour increase.) In his annual report, administrator Josef Risi presented an estimated budget for the operation of the 64 -bed nursing home for the 1985-86 fiscal year. Expenses will total $932,842, with -salaries accounting for $677,757, and benefits taking $84.008 for the 19 full-time staffers and the 27 part- timers. Offsetting this will be $503;953 in maintenance paid by residents, a pro- vincial subsidy of $393,573, and in- come of $24,090 from preferred ac- commodation under the extended care program. In the past year a steam cooker was added in the kitchen, eight hi -lo mechanical beds were purchased for the extended care section, the counter at the nursing station was replaced, the sewer bed replaced and the roof repaired. Risi also mentioned the new mobile chart cart, which he hopes will 5ring the Home one step closer to the accreditation he would like to see in the next two years. Della Gascho reported for the Ladies' Auxiliary. Neil•Gingerich asked if the head corse could sit on the board of management. Risi replied that accor- ling to present bylaws. that would be t conflict of interest. Wallace said a look back would show that a prerequisite of employ- ment stated the nursing director was to attend board of management .meetings, but "that fell by the wayside". A representative from the ministry community and social services said many boards arrange to have stall members participate on sub- committees. Wallace was presented with a wall clock complete with gavel. and received a standing ovation. The new board of directors will be Orval Wassman, member at large, chairman: Mrs. Joanne Van Raay.
