South Huron District High School is
honoring 12 senior students with the
annual Student of the Year Awards.
Six male and six female students
were nominated by grade i1. 12 and
13 students. The senior students will
vote on the final two choic•esWednes-
day. The top male and female student
of the year will be crowned at mid-
night Friday, during the formal.
The student of the year award
recognizes students who have con-
tributed to the school and communi-
ty during their high school years. The
students being honoured this year
include:
Liam Brennan, the son of Mary and
William Brennan of Crediton. Liana is

currently the student council's first
vice-president and has been an in-
tramural rep or student council rep
during each of his years at South
Huron. Liana has played on the Toot -
ball team for four years and has
helped as a photographer for the
school yearbook.
Drew Hasselback. the 18 year old
son of Bruce and Barb Hasselback, is
this year's social convener. The grade
12 student has been a member of the
Reach for the Top team and has been
on the staff of the school newspaper
for four years. Drew has played
guitar in two theatre productions and
teaches guitar lessons in his spare
time. Next year Drew will attend
Neuchatel Junior College in
Switzerland to study grade 13.
Steve Batten. Exeter,is the son of
Bill and Kaaren Batten. Steve has
been a member of the football team
for four nears and is a member of the
famous No -name intramural team.
The grade 13 student has played for
the Hawks for two seasons and his
written the SHDHS news in the
Times -Advocate this year. Steve is a
prefect and plans to study in the tine
of journalism at university next year.
Joe Martens is the son of Arnold
and Ann Martens, R. R.2 Crediton and
is currently the second vice-president
of the student council. An honour roll
student. Joe has been involved in the
football and soccer program and
helps as a coach for minor soccer in
Exeter. This member of the No -
names intramural squad- plans to
study science at the University of
Waterloo next September.
Scott Jesney is the 20 year old son
of Sharon and Melvin Wurm, Hensall.
Scott has served as a student council
rep this year and has been involved
in the football, soccer and wrestling
programs over his five years at South
Huron. The grade 13 student has serv-
ed as a prefect and is one of the three
invaluable members of the No -name
intramural champs to graduate this
year.
Tony Jones. Huron Park, is the son
of Tony and Jean Jones, Duron Park.
The nineteen year old student has
participated in football, badminton.
'track and soccer. Tony has helped as
including the salaries. the township

"This reserve fund is used when we

"Last year we were trying to build
the complex t so that account was left
empty."

Another major decrease is in the in-
terest on temporary borrowing. Coun-
cil expected lhis expenditure to run no
higher than $40.000. compared to last
year's actual figure of $47.966.

peets to collect $19.276 more this year
on street lights. the water system.
residential. commercial and business
taxation. The projected figure for 1985
is $:3206,:374

revenue for use of the cotnplex for
parties and sale of pop. juice and pro-
ceeds from the bar will be $12.000.

"Last year we had a larger sup-
plementary. so we received a larger
grant." explained Mr. Graham.
An overall view of the budget does
not show any drastic increases or
decreases. however. this is the first
budget with the completed Stanley
Township Community Complex.

Steve Batten
an assistant coach to the girls field
hockey team for three years and has
been a member of the National Rifle
Team as well as playing for the
Hawks. The co-organizer of this
year's formal, Tony is a Training Of-
iicer in Army Cadets.
Pauline Brand is the daughter of
Rennie Brand, R.It.1 Exeter. Pauline
was the captain of this year's field
hockey team and has been a very
valuable member of the team for five
years. She has been a member of the
volleyball team for lour seasons and
is on the intramural executive.
Pauline is 19 years old.
Colleen Glasgow is the 18 year old
daughter of James and Margaret
-Glasgow of Exeter. A student council
rep for two years. Colleen has been in-
volved with the math team and bad-
minton club. She has been an honour
roll student for each of her five yeas
at South Huron. Colleen plans to at-
tend the University of Toronto next
year in hopes of becoming a
pharmacist.
Susan Birmingham, the student
council president, is the daughter of
Gary. and Connie Birmingham of Ex-
eter. In grade 12, Susan represented
South Huron at the Terry Fox Youth
Centre and hosted a French exchange
student from Chicoutimi: She has
been a member of the cross country.
track and gymnastics teams. The 18
year old has skated for the Exeter
Figure Skating Club and has par-
ticipated on precision teams. Susan
plans to attend university next year
and may decide to attend Teacher's
College.
Jacqui Cottrell is the daughter of
Graham and Agnes Cottrell of Hen-
sall. Jacqui is currently the secretary
of the student council and has served
as a rep for three years. She has been
a member of the basketball, track
and cross country teams and placed
second on the floor at the Ontario
gymnastics championships this year.
Jacqui plans to pursue the career of
a dental hygienist.
Starr Jesney is the daughter of
Sharon and Melvin Wurm of Hensall.
She played basketball for five years
and was also a member of the gym-
nastics squad for five seasons. Start-

competed at OFSSA in gymnastics
one ye.ir and has been a student coun-
cil rep in the past. Starr, a 20 year old,
is a gymnastics instructor and was
employed as a playground supervisor
last summer. She plans to study
recreation at college in September.
Sue Sullivan is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Patrick Sullivan of Mt.
Carmel. Sue has been a student coun-
cil rep since grade nine and was the
secretary assistant in grade 12. She
has helped as a prefect and has been
on the cross country team for four
years and the track team for two. Sue
is 20 years old.
The very deserving 12 students
should be recognized for their con-
tribution to the local high school. The
final choices will be awarded by last
year's winners, George Tomes and
Alice Dietrich. at the formal.
Spectators are welcome throughout
the evening. Friday. to catch a glimp-
se of the decorations in the theme of
"Evening in Paris." Blue Midnight
