mother should be mother of the year
and you'll be flooded with a variety of
responses.
That's what the Alpha Phi chapter
of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority found
out when they decided to stage such
a contest
Heather Wagner, 9, of 7 Kingscourt
Crescent was judged the winner in the
five to nine age bracket for her opi-
nions on her mother, Glenda.
A grade eight student at Precious
Blood Separate School, Rosie Brand,
won the senior division for 1.0 to 14
year olds with her comments on her
mother, Melita, 68 Iluron St. E.
Following are the two winning
essiys, along with some of those rated
for special mention by the judging
committee.

I think my mother is the best mom
in the world because she cooks and
washes clothes. She loves me even if
I'm bad. She helps -pay for food and
clothes.
My mom gives me a ride to school,
dancing, baseball, etc. She helps with
education especially her Nursery
School. She works very hard to get
her money, but she's worth every pen-
ny of it, She's the big marshmallow.
She lets me go anywhere I want
almost. I wouldn't trade my mom for
any other mom in the world.

My Mother
My mother is very special to me,
she is my closest friend.
IJIcan tell her my secrets because
1 can trust her.
She always has an open lap and
open arms to comfort me when I am
hurt, frightened or disappointed.
She listens and understands me.
I know that the events in my life are
important to her too.
I don't know what I would do
without my mom.
She plays a very important role in
my life.
It's good just to know my mother is
always there.
I wouldn't want anyone else for my
mother because I love her.

Farm future
is uncertain
Tom and Kelly Ryan are still
waiting to -hear frrkn the Farm Credit
Corporation whether or not they can
keep their farm.
The Ryans, who have a farm just
north of Mt.Carmel, hoped to know the)
results yesterday of tenders on their
farm. But the FCC said the tenders
hadn't been reviewed by theirGuelph
office yet, and they would get back to
the couple within a day or two. The
Ryans' financial advisor, Ron Phillips
of Kingmount Financial Services in
Arva, told the couple negotiations
with the FCC went fairly well. Phillips
said he is optimistic about reaching
a deal with the FCC.
About a month ago, the Ryans were
stunned to learn from a newspaper
advertisement that the federal crown
corporation had put their farm up for
tenders without notifying them. Then
on Wednesday, the credit boss of the
FCC, Brian Strom, called to invite the
Ryans to submit their own tender.
They had planned to submit one
anyway.
The newpaper advertisement call-
ed for tenders to be submitted by May
3 on the 150 acre Farm and three-
bedroom house. The Ryans owe
significantly more than the land is
worth, because of falling land prices
and declining farm commodity
prices. Tom Ryan didn't want to say
exactly how much they owe, but said
the farm is worth $175,000.
Phillips is unhappy about the way
the whole matter has been handled by
the FCC. "The Ryans are very good
farmers, and they're being sold out.
I was at farm credit yesterday for
meetings that went on all afternnon,
discussing their policies generally.
The Ryans are not unique -- I have 23
cases in my files that are similar. The
Ryans are willing to go public to try
to help other farmers."
Phillips feels that the "FCC through
their rigid policies is taking out a
whole generation of farmers Ryan's
age." Tom Ryan is 31. and the couple
have two young children. Phillips
cites problems stemming from buy-
ing a few years whin prices were
high. and then getting into trouble
when they fell.
The FC(' was approached by
Phillips on behalf of the Ryans 13
months ago in April '84. At that time
going power of sale and letting Ryan
tender was suggested. But it took the
F'('C 'til September 10 decide. and
then the F'C(' imposed a moratorium
on farm sales until January 15. This
"created uncertainty in thousands of
people's lives". according to Phillips.
Meanwhile Phillips had devised
another scheme to let the FCC deal
with the Ryans without making a
policy decision. but the FCC con-
sidered it "a conspiracy to defraud."
Shortly before the ad was published
this April an F'('C rep visited the farm
and indicated that he didn't think the
power of sale would go through till the
fall according to Phillips. The a week
later the first ad went in
Phillips says the Ryanttenderlisnot
based on what the farm is worth, hut
on the income the farm would
generate. and how much debt the
farm would service "If the power of
sale had gone through a year ago. the
farm would have been worth more.
because the hog business was better."
Phillips said.
The reasons I think my mother
should win the Mother of the Year
Award is that she always worries
when I am late and shows she cares
about me. Another reason is she
always hugs and kisses me. She
usually says she loves me at least
once every day. Every time we lose
sport games, she always comforts
..me. When there are storms at night,
she always brings us downstairs
because she thinks the wind will blow
the top of the house down. She really
is a person who cares. if we fall, she
will bandage us up. When my sister
and I fight, she always makes us say
sorry and give each other a hug and
a kiss.

Do you know why my mom should
be Mother of the Year? You don't?
Well now, she's loveable and cooks for
us. What would we do without a
mother to cook for us and do your
laundry? If you didn't have that you'd
stink all the time. We don't need that,
do we? She does the dishes and makes
beds, gives us money to buy a treat,
feeds the baby, changes the baby and
plays with him. So don't you think
after all that work she could at least
have one day off?

My mole should be awarded
Mother of the Year because anyone
that can live with me for nine years
should!
My mom is the only one that will
smile at me when "1" show her a 10
inch dew worm. 1 guess those days
are over! Well anyway. I think "I"
should tell you a little bit about her.
She is the best mom you could have!
She gets me everything! And last but
not least she would not do a thing to
give me up or let me down!

I think my mother should be mother
of the year because she's nice, kind
and is always helping me with things,
and doing things for me like clean my
clothes and if I had to do that myself
my clothes would be torn and ragged.
This one thing why my mom should
be mother of the year is she likes alt
of tt y friends, that makes me feel
goociE,-and she helps others, thats the
best thing.
The thing that would make her even
better is to stop smoking, it wouldn't
help me much but it sure would help
her.

Mothers are special, especially on
Mother's Day.
She's not just our mother, but she's
also our very best friend.
If you think back about all the
things she has done for us, you'll
realize that it's a hard job.
When we were hurt, she was our
doctor, when we were lonely, she was
our friend, when we were in trouble,
she's the only person to get us out of it.
I can share my secrets with her. 1
know she's a trustworthy person. 1
love mothers. I'll show her that 1 real-
ly do, I'll tell you about it if you can
keep a secret til Mother's Day!
Mothers are everthing special.
