Richard Wayne 1 Hick Ifawley met his new congregation - and the congregation of Exeter United Church met their new minister - at an induction service at the church on Friday night. Hawley, his wife Lin- da and daughters Beth. 12. and Arty. 10, had moved to Exeter the day before. Hawley grew up in Galt. and was a special ed teacher in Waterloo for 12 years t the last three as a consultant before finally yielding to the increas- ingly strong call to the ministry. "From the time I was a teenager 1 hought about becoming a minister. but 1 was never a terrific student, and the prospect of so many years of education was too much", Hawley revealed with refreshing candour, ad- ding "as I worked toward my BA. I blind university was not as much trouble as 1 had anticipated. Six years ago Hawley surrendered to God's call. The tlawleys . sold their house, and Hawley enrolled at Em- manuel. the United Church's theological college in Toronto. For the next three years he attended classes form Monday to Thursday, then spent Friday to Sunday as a student minister at a pastoral charge in WEIGHT WATCHERS .- e04RA,: 9iA es A! et ',A, r.: AAM „<ata +Mssa sij , + 74NAairtie Vote* , **Save a res As►rie rr w r,ys : a vaas a ltaYw.4iv' U. *OA*hkt Y. - ,.'r Rlk i'R^ihAYMJ't .:# .ta r:i! >a RAai *se x t7a iJ aC 4. se ! ar **sr **el eiN. After graduating with a • M.1)iv. degree in 1982, Hawley became minister of the 260 family congrega- tion of Emmanuel United Church in Sault Ste. Marie. Exeter is his second charge. Hawley preached his first sermon from the Exeter pulpit on Sunday. and admits he was nervous. This was offset, he said, by the great deal of warmth he has already experienced. especially from members of the pastoral -relations committee. Ifawley is very impressed with the traditional beauty of the Exeter United Church sanctuary and, as a music lover who enjoys both singing and listening, he considers the pipe -organ a real asset. "Here you really know you're in church". he remarked. When asked what hopes and dreams he has for his new charge. Hawley replied that he wants to develop a sense of family within the congregation. He has a strong interest in adult education, where people get together in study groups and are helped along in their journey of faith. Hawley said often Christian education slops at age 14, and he sees the lack bf adult education programs as one shortcoming of the United Church. Hawley said that. for hint. working with small groups such as adult educirni)rl, oCconfirmalion classes, or parents whose children are going to be baptized, Is one of the most ejoyable aspects of ministry. Hawley said he looks forward to getting to know the 300 families mak- ing up the congregation of Exeter United Church. as he also wants to become involved in this community. •"fhere is a tremendous heritage to build on," he enthused. Springtime treat is here April showers bring May flowers, like crocuses, daffodils and, believe it or not, asparagus - the delectable member of the lily family' Ontario asparagus is available from late April to late June, with the supply peaking from mid-May to mid- June. When buying asparagus, look for straight, bright green stalks with tightly closed. purplish lips. Asparagus is generally sold in 500 gran) ( one pound ) bunches, which provide four large servings. Ontario asparagus is generally in the stores within a day of -harvest and is best eaten the same day as pur- chased. However. the fiesh flavour of Ontario asparagus can be maintain- ed for up to two days, if the stalk ends are wrapped in a dampened pap.?r towel and the spears stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper. When preparing for cooking, easi- ly snap off the butt ends of the stalks where the white turns to green. ( You can keep the ends to add to soups). Wash thoroughly in cold water and remove any traces of sand from under the scales. Take special care in handling the tip ends as they break easily '['here are meny methods of cook- ing asparagus, but the secret to a superbly cooked product is timing. Whether steamed, boiled or stir -fried, asparagus should be cooked until tender -crisp, or about 5 to 7 minutes. To cook asparagus in a microwave oven arrange the stalks in a circle. with the tips facing the centre. For two servings. add 25 ml of water and cook at full power for 2 to 3 minutes. For six servings, add 50 ml of water and cook at full power for 4 to 5 minutes. Asparagus is also delicious served cold. After cooking, im- mediately refresh under cold water to set the colour and stop the cooking. [)rain and chill. You can make the asparagus season last longer by freezing. Simp- ly prepare as for cooking, then group speai-s •according to thickness of stalks.blanch small spears 2 minutes, medium for 3 and large for 4. Cool, drain, and pat dry and seal spears in freezer bags. Store up to one year at normal freezer temperatures. lie sure and enjoy the fresh. delicate taste of Ontario asparagus as often hs possible, while it's available.
