Ladies record
area's history
Bit by bit, a puzzle is being put
together. Fact by fact, the history of
Tweedsmuir is coming to life, as the
ladies of the Women's Institute of On-
tario, Huron South District, compile
it into books.
The W.I.O. is the only organization
that keeps- track of most of these
things. The history of area farms, who
lived in various houses, family trees,
records of churches, libraries, schools
and factories -- all these go into the
books and scrapbooks the Institute
keeps. The area covered by this group
includes Elimville, Seaforth, Kippen,
Exeter, Grand Bend, Crediton,
Dashwood and Zurich.
Each branch has a curator, and
Hilda Payne is the curator for the
Huron South District. The eight bran-
ches report to Hilda, and she compiles
information from them into the
district book. The eight branches also
have their own books. Recently Hilda
went to a big workshop in Toronto,
sponsored by the Federated Women's
Institutes of Ontario, to learn new
methods of tracking down these facts.
- At a meeting on Tuesday, she shared
that knowledge with local members
involved in the work.
It's a never-ending task. When a
book is completed, another is started
-- it's living history. The books have
been an Institute' project since the
organization began.
