Rummage more profitable
This year's spring hospital rum-
mage sale was the best ever, accor-
ding to treasurer Lillian Campbell_
She has already deposited over
$7,400 in a special bank account, and
expects about another $100 to be
brought in soon.
The Ladies Auxiliary of South
Huron Hospital held their first rum-
mage sale the year after the hospital
opened in 1953. Sales have been held
in both spring and fall for the past 22
years and are becoming more
popular each year
Carloads of bargain -hunters from
Parkhill to Winghan> converge on the
South Huron rec centre each April
and October, line up patiently, and
wail for the doors to open at 10:0(1
a.m.
As various departments are set up
in the same place every time,
regulars steer a course directly for
books, or toys, or children's clothes,
to get first choice. Mission ac-
complished, they can browse leisure-
ly through hats and purses. shoes,
housewares, adult clothing, jeweller\
or the numerous other departments,
put in a bid at the silent auction table,
or stay and get vocal at the traditional
noon auction.
Mrs. Campbell attributes the sale's
growing popularity to the fact people
are becoming accustomed to a "good.
clean rummage sale - stuff is well
sorted and anything grubby is out'.
'!'hough all conveners are members
of the Auxiliary, many of the t -in
volunteers who work so hard are not
"1 don't know of any other Exeter
project that involves as many groups
as this one", Mrs. Campbell explain-
ed. "Volunteers from the churches,
the service clubs and almost every
organization in town help with this
project. It's a lot oI work, but a lot ut
fun."
The whole community works
together for the rummage sale, and
the whole community benefits from it
Proceeds have been used for capital
expenditures al the hospital. rather
than operating costs. Purchases have
included waiting room furniture. the
whirlpool in the physiotherapy
department, the autoclave in the
operating room and hospital beds.
Last year's rummage sale proceeds
helped pay for the $28,000 air condi-
tioning system. 111 1983. the auxiliary
handed over $15,500 for the attractive
chairs in patients' rooms.
As long as Exeter has a hospital. it
can count on also having the twice -
annual rummage sats to supply the
local insttotion with those desirable
t>ut costly extras that make a hospital
stay more pleasant.
