Operation of system
reviewed by officials
A special meeting with Stephen
Township, Grand Bend and ministry
of enviornment representatives was
held in the Grand Bend council
chambers in reponse to a letter from
Ridge Pine Parkto the Ministry of the
Environment.
The fetter questioned the difference
in the sewage meter and pump hours
and the amount billed. Ash Shah at-
tended in place of Andrew Orr who
was absent although he had requested
the meeting with the ministry.
The main concern was why the
primary rate increased by 5 per cent
and secondary rate did not increase.
Shah explained that the primary
system was in a deficit position and
should have increased even more.
The primary includes the main
pumping station, lines from it to the
lagoon and the lagoon. The secondary
system includes other pumping sta-
tions located in Grand Bend and the
lines in Grand Bend.
Reeve Bob Sharen explained that
the secondary rate was of no concern
to the Township of Stephen or Ridge
Pine Park. It is paid by the village on-
ly, while the primary one is paid by
Grand Cove and Grand—Bend --
together.
The rates in the village will remain
the same per household for another
year, because Grand Bend had a
surplus in the sewer account.
it was suggested to Stephen Reeve
Allan Walper and Clerk -treasurer
WilmarWein, present at this meeting.
that they should charge an extra
amount to create a cushion for the
system in case unexpected expenses
should arise.
'the village of Grand Bend and.
Stephen township planned to meet
with MOE annually to review the
system.
_, Both Ways
On Sunday morning Mc. and Mrs.
Chris Steele, Grand Cove Estates,
transferred their United Church
membership to Grand Bend from
Lindsay.
Idella Gable played the organ for
the special music by the choir "We
Thee, Amen'' and for "Be
Careful Little Tongue What You Say"
for the children's time.
Joan Eagleson read the scriptures
from Ezekiel and Ephesians, wherein
Rev. Peebles named his topic "Old
Fashioned and Up -to Date" as he ex-
plained that a person could be both.
Next Sunday, May 5, the Stephen
Central School Choir will be singing
at the QBUC. See M. Desjardine for

"Once the message gets laid down. it's

professor at Sl. Jerome's University
in • Waterloo. He was the key note
speaker at the Huron -Perth Roman
Catholic separate school board's pro-
fessional development day in St,
Marys.
The professor told the teachers to
go out and give honest praise to the
students pointing out that children
can identify genuine praise.
The professor's talk was on "self-
esleem", but he saw it as a chance to
tell teachers of the role they play in
forming the self-esteem of students.
"Show a minimal amount of car-
ing."said Theis.
Ile admitted that it could be tough
to be empathetic and caring to 35
children a day. especially when
teachers may have their own worries
or concerns at home.
"But doesn't it make sense to try'.'"
he asked.
Another speaker at the day -long
event was Ed Krupica of Hamilton.
Ile conducted a workshop on teaching
children from one parent families.
As Catholics. he said the teachers
have to provide respect. solidarity.
understanding and practical help for
children from one parent families.
With Krupica were .Iohn Duheau
and Teresa Goodall. both the head of
one parent families. The two talked
about their personal divorce ex-
perience and how the school fit in.
Dubeau said when a family is in the
middle of a divorce. or even after-
wards. the only thing that remains
stable for the children is school'.
He mentioned some of the ex-
periences his children have gone
through in the hopes that the teachers
wouldn't repeat them.
Once, a teacher had the children
whose parents were divorced. raise
their hands. Then the leacher asked
the students whose parents had an an-
nulment to keep their hands up. The
children were left with the impression
that unless their parents had an an-
nulment they weren't good Catholics.
which is wrong said Mr. Deheau.
The family studies co-ordinator for
the•local separate school board. Ron
(.lidding said a lot of teachers attend-
ed that workshop and there will pro-
bably be more of its kind in future
professional development days.
