Local grade twelve badminton ace Kendra Arthur competed at the On- tario finals in Toronto over the weekend and finished the tourney in eighth position. A total of 16 conferences were represented at OFSSA, involving 32 competitors from across the province. Arthur opened the tourney with two straight wins. In her first match, the local faced a competitor from George Vanier and eliminated the Toronto District representative in straight games by scores of 11-5 and 11-4. It look Arthur three games to defeat her second opponent, a competitor from Woodlands Secondary School. Next Arthur took on the tourna- ment's second seed, Mary Wales. The local was little match for the Banding Memorial player who defeated Ar- thur in two straight by scores of 11-5 and 11-1. - "Wales is a really good player." Ar- thur said. Wales continued on in win- ning fashion until the final match where she was defeated by first seed Ingrid Fairbrother. The loss put the local athlete into the double elimination round where she met Cheryl Takaodoa from Wex- ford C.I. Facing elimination Arthur opened -the match with an 11-7 win in game one but went down to defeat 11-8 and 11-4. The loss put an end to her day and placed her eighth in the province. Arthur's match with the Waxford representative proved to be one of the best matches of the tourney, competi- tion wise. "We were both,., really tired. There was lots of long rallies Soccer coaches needed The Exeter Contennial Soccer Club is out to start another season of soc- cer for the kidiof Exeter and area. As in previous seasons we will again compete in the Lucan and district soccer league. Parents will be notified about the first practice this week. The sport of soccer keeps growing in this area with the result that we %vitt be fielding 13 teams in five age groups. plus two senior teams. Because of the number of teams, coaching this year is a real problem. As of right now, lour teams are without a coach and unless we find some soon these teams will have to be split over all the other teams with the result that each team will have to sit out two or three players every game. We urge those parents who come to all their kids' games anyway to give consideratim to becoming a coach or assistant coach for their child's team. We can guarantee you that once you become involved you will love it. Please contact Marlin Dellruyn 2:34-6798 immediately if you're interested. We look forward to a great season with the kids and lots of tun and that took a lot of energy from both of us." Arthur says. The local 16 -year-old looks forward to returning to OFSSA competition on the badminton court next season. "It was fun and I hope to be back." Arthur. an excellent all-round athlete. is no rookie to competition at the provincial level after seeing • OFSSA action on the field hockey field. Finishing eighth in the province is a great accomplishment but all ready Kendra Arthur has her sights set on bettering that mat'k. til BIG CATCH — Bill Russell, RR 1 Exeter, shows off his 13.3 Ib. salmon he landed during the Sarnia Salmon Derby which began last Satur- day.
