V MARTS r,nr.•,nu H -P SS Board gives approval to closure of Ecole Ste. Marie At a meeting Tuesday night of the Huron -Perth County Roman Catholic Separate School Board formal ap- proval was given to closing Ecole Ste. Marie at St. Joseph. The school will not open for September 1986 classes. The 50 pupils will be accom- modated at St. Boniface School in Zurich, six miles away. Board chairman Ronald Marcy said the school needs expensive repairs, including a new roof, new heating system and new windows. He said closing Ecole Ste. Marie, instead of fixing it, would free up money to provide permanent accommodation for the students at St. Boniface School. The board agreed the kindergarten students from Ecole Ste. Marie who attend St. Boniface, will remain in St. Boniface for the next school year. The board will increase the core French at St. Boniface School to 40 minutes in grade 4 for September 1986, and 40 minutes in grade 5 for September 1987, The board will provide transporta- tion from Ecole Ste. Marie area to the French immersion program in Goderich for students who wish to be enrolled in the program starting September 1985. Dara Hartman was hired as teacher ( Principal's Relief) at St. Boniface School, Zurich; Heather 11 farcy is to be transferred from }lesson to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Sheila McQuillan is to be transfer- red from Our Lady' of Mount Carmel to St. Marys. The Huron -Perth County Roman Catholic Separal School Board listened to a plea from 10 concerned parents from St. Mary's School, Hesson, asking the board to alter its decision to put a portable classroom at the school and the board agreed to wait to make a decision at its May -18 meeting. Mary Kocher, spokesman; explain- ed that the kindergarten pupils have their classroom in the basement -- "a very cozy and very busy environ- ment, more or less in their own little world. They have their own washroom, their own drinking foun- tain, their own sink for their paint classes, their own cloakroom and lunch box shelf. They have a well equipped, cheery classroom, well suited to their needs -- at a four and five year old child's level and size. 'l'he area outside their classroom. and this includes their washroom. cloakroom and display area. are all visible to the kindergarten teacher from the door of the classroom." Mrs. Kocher said they realized that the kindergarten room, now barely accommodates the 14 students in the class this year, but for the projected 25 students who will be attending kindergarten next term starting the first of September, the solution would be to divide the class. She said the lit- tle ones could continue in their pre- sent location which is ideal for the children. She said no renovations would be needed and no more kindergarten furniture. only the ad- ditional cost of a teacher teaching a full day, rather than a half day With 12 students, some 6f various ethnic backgrounds. it would be easier for the teacher to give them more individual attention. she stated. She spoke. of the expense of altering another classroom for the kindergarten students. the cost of put ting that displaced class !grade 5 was suggested by the board into a por- table which would be costly to pur- chase. renovate and furnish. She spoke of the problem of these students having to put on outerwear to attend gym classes in the main school building, attend computer classes. audio-visual clases, do research. or use resource material. She said a por- table must tx located no less than 40 feet from the school Ronald Marcy, board chairman. gave another side when he read a let- ter from a mother saying she would preter that the 25 kindergarten children not be divided but kept intact in one class and that ttie services of a volunteer teacher's aid tx• used. She expressed concern those children of ethnic origin might be channelled in- to one class and separated from other students. i Mrs. Kocher said certain- ly not, as the parents were happy to have their children mix with (htterent people.) The board voted seven to ,even when a motion was made to continue the kindergarten classes in the base- ment and it was agreed no decision should be made until the May 18 meeting.
