PUC manager defends
council pay increases
PUC manager Hugh Davis com-
mented on the T -A's "unduky harsh
criticism" of Exeter council's recent
pay raise at the opening of the April
meeting of the Exeter Commission'.
He said the town was very fortunate
that both the council and the Commis-
sioner had been working for substan-
tially less than most other Huron
County councils and PUCs.
Davis said he is compiling informa-
tion on what the other five Huron
municipalities pay their Commis-
sioners. When and if the Exeter Com-
missioners decide on a "fair and just
increase", he will pass the recom-
mendation on to Exeter council.
which has the authority to grant an
increase.
Commissioner Harry DeVries said
he considers his time on the PUC to
be part of his civic duty. but if Exeter
Commissioners are paid a great deal
less, leaving the present stipend un-
changed would not be fair to the next
Commission.
Davis reported a productive•
meeting with Tom Kanampuzha.
owner of the new nursing home. to
resolve location of hydro, water. size
o't meter, Where overhead lines will
come in and other relevant matters.
Transformers for the nursing home
and the Taylor and Veri subdivisions
have been ordered through a Win-
nipeg company which promises 15 to
17 weeks delivery time, and also has
the lowest prices.
DeVries asked about back-up
systems for places such as a nursing
home. Davis replied that the PUC is
not responsible. He said it would be
just as disastrous if the hospital ser-
vice blew up, or Canadian Canners
lost their service in the middle of pro-
cessing 1,000 acres of peas. Davis said
supplying back-up that might never
have to be used would cost approx-
imately $60,000 based on the current
price for .transformers.
"It's a question of security and how
much you can afford to put into it".
Davis added.
Daviis said he is working with
develc iers who contemplate acquir-
ing land and building three stores. He
•
is also trying to get an easement
through for a storm drain to service
a prospective development in the
north end of town.
Power will be shut off from 3:30
a.m. until 8:00 a.m. in the Zehrs com-
plex while Imes are cut in. Beginning
this week, that section will be fed
from Centralia rather than Seaforth.
• Davis said no outages were
reported during the March 30 wind-
storm, proving the efficiency of the
PUC's tree -trimming program.
Former employee Verla Russell
was selected from 20 applicants for a
part-time job in the PUC office.
Both Don and Ron Heywood sub-
mitted tenders for painting part of the
exterior of the apartment above the
PUC office, as well as the porch. front
door and warehouse door. Ron
Heywood•s tender of $1,17.5 was ac-
cepted, it was the lower of the two.
Turning to the water department,
Davis said the Parker lour-plex on
Albert has now been serviced, and a
water line has been completed un
Carling north of Sanders.
As Mayor Bruce Shaw was absent,
the sewage surcharge issue was
postponed until the next meeting on
May 31.
