Users pay most costs
for homemaking service
Most homemaking costs are paid
by the user says Huron County Town
and Country Homemakers executive
director Jean Young.
"The people of Huron County are
purchasing out of pocket a much
greater proportion of their homemak-
ing needs," Mrs. Young told the April
9 annual meeting of Town and Coun-
try Homemakers.
Statistics presented by Mrs. Young
show that 66.4 percent of Town and
Country's expenses are paid by the
clients. The remainder of the ex-
penses are paid for by donations, a
grant from Huron County and the pro-
vince. This compares to a city agen-
cy where the majority of the expenses
are paid through municipal tax
dollars and United Way.
"The city agency goes to United
Way and request and receive funds.
Town and Country Homemakers does
not have United Way and the respon-
sibility rests entirely on the shoulders
of the board to raise funds." said Mrs.
Young.
Board chairman Thea Trick of Clin-
ton said the charitable agency has
three mandates, and they are to re-
main financially sound. to make
available homemaking services to
Huron County and to provide funds
for those who are in need of
homemaking, but cannot pay•the total
cost.
"This board function has caused
some controversy," said Mrs. Trick
of the third mandate.
"How much money should be
available for how many clients who
are not able to pay full rate? In
January 1985, 27 of the 100 (or 27 per-
cent ) of private clients were subsidiz-
ed through fund-raising monies and a
$33,000 grant for the support of the
elderly," she said.
Mrs. Trick said the contingency
fund for those who cannot afford the
agency's full rate of $7.35 per hour is
in place' because the agency
recognizes the need.
"Our ability to subsidize any
client's rate is directly related to the
securing of funds," she said.
Services for the agency increased
by 29 percent last year ever the 1983
figures. There were 1,839 clients in
1983 and 2,486 clients last year.
"The greatest problem the board of
directors and myself as executive
director meet each year is raising
money to replenish the contingency
fund which enables us to provide ser-
vice to many seniors and families who
would otherwise be unable to afford
homemaking help," said Mrs. Young.
In order to raise these funds, the
agency will continue its annual
amaryllis bulb campaign. Only 3 per-
cent of the agency's time is spent with
contingency clients.
Bob Shrier of Signal -Star
Publishing of Goderich, was the guest
speaker of the evening. Talking on
human potential, Shrier said "life
gives you time and space".
"It's up to you to decide how to fill
it," he said.

Mark special week
Members of the Medical
Laboratory Technology profession,
about 200,000 strong all across North
America, are eelebrating this week
with the intent to inform other health
care professionals and the general
public of the vital role played by
medical laboratory technologists in
the diagnosis and treatment of
disease and in the maintenance of
health. Our profession, by its .very
nature has required us to work in the
background in various health care
facilities. As a result we have been un-
seen, unheard and virtually unknown.
We are now coming out from behind
the scenes to seek the recognition our
highly skilled work so justly deserves.
Employed at South Huron Hospital
are three medical laboratory
technologists. one full time and two
part time. To many. we appear as on-
ly a collection centre. However, of the
45,276 laboratory tests ordered by
physicians in 1984, 38,355 were per-
formed in this laboratory. Approx-
imately 1.500 different laboratory
tests exist. many requiring expen-
sive, extremely technical pieces of
equipment.
No one lab can afford to perform all
tests. Our lab is licenced to perform
35 of the most routinely requested
tests resulting in 85 percent of the
total tests ordered being performed
on site.
In addition to patient tests, we have
in place an extensive quality control
program to ensure accuracy, preci-
sion and confidence in test results.
This quality control program requires
an additional 20,440 tests be perform-
ed each year by laboratory staff.
I would like to take (his opportuni-
ty to thank the Royal Canadian
Legion, R.E. Pooley Branch for their
support. Through their donations, our
laboratory has been able to purchase
three pieces of state -of -art equipment,
enabling us to provide a progressive
level of service to the public.
