Loyal gals perform well at OFSSA
The five South Iluron students who
travelled to Peterborough to compete
in the Ontario gymnastics champion-
ships enjoyed a very successful
weekend.
The local senior competitors were
the trlost successful at OFSSA. Lee
-O'Rourke placed first on the bars and
Jacqui Cottrell was second on the
floor and 13th on the bars.
Cottrell. being amongst the first to
take to the floor. found the pressure
almost unbearable as she sat to see
if her score of 8.9 would be broken by
one of the nearly 75 competitors.
The difference between a silver
and gold on the floor for Cottrell turn-
ed out to be only inches. A penalty of
two tenths of a point was subtracted
from her score after she stepped out
of bounds during her routine.. The
penalty cost Cottrell the gold medal
- she finished only one tenth of a point
behind the winner.
'1 just feel very fortunate to have
finished that high". Cottrell says.
"There are a lot of excellent athletes
at OFSSA."

student Lee O'Rourke after she
received the gold medal for her per-
formance on the bars in the senior
division.
O'Rourke, who was third overall in
last year's Ontario Finals as an in-
termediate concentrated more this
year on the bars then other apparatus
and the result was finishing first in
the province.
Lee O'Rourke's only comment to
the press was a very modest "I'm
very happy ."
In the junior category, Patty
O'Toole was pleasantly surprised by
her ninth place finish on the beam.
Team-mate Kerrin Mehagan finished
34th on the floor.
Carole Morrissey, the only local in-
termediate to qualify for OFSSA,
finished 13th on the bars.
Saturday's competition put the cap
nn a veru successful season for the
local gymnasts. Congratulations are
in order for the tremendous ac-
complishment reach by the five local
athletes at the provincial level.
