Exercise for brain helps back
As I write this column, I'm bent
over the typewriter racked with pain.
Bent because 1 can't straighten up.
racked because hot knives stab up
and down the lett side of my back
every time I so much as twitch a mus-
cle. All of this because I cleaned out
at some point in their lives. That's
over three billion people who know the
agony of just getting into their
clothes, of the torture o[ trying to sit
on a chair. This is the high price we
pay because our ancestors decided to
walk on their hind legs instead of

my clothes closet, last week, and
found a lot of garments that wouldn't
button or zip up. Clearly. an exercise
program was urgently needed.
Starting out sensibly. 1 worked up
to more strenuous pulls and pushes as
the days progressed. Finally, wanting
to get some action on my flabby tum-
my, I decided to try that oldie of ly
ing on my back, raising my legs and
letting theta sink slowly to the floor.
It was arduous work and I groaned
and gasped every time my feet got
within four inches of the floor. With
great' difficulty I made it up to five
times, and then, foolishly, pushed my
luck and tried for five more. On the
ninth lowering of the legs, a muscle
popped. and pain pinned me to the
floor.
Don't feel sorry for me. t know bet-
ter. Hampered by a weak back for
• several years, I know there are things
I cannot do and slowly lowering my
legs to the floor is one of them. But
because 1 never seem to learn. I
dared to think that maybe, this time,
it would be OK.
Eventually, I crept to the
bathroom, filled the tub with hot
water and lowered myself in. This
always eases the pain for me, so I per-
suaded a friend to drive me to a near-
by motel where I could soak in the
whirlpool. 'l'he hot, gushing water
helped, but didn't cure, so I went back
home for my usual therapy... a cou-
ple of pain killer tablets, a hot water
bottle and my bed.
That was yesterday. Today, I still
move about with difficulty, but ex-
perience tells me the back is already
on the mend.
Bad backs run in our family, but
we're not alone. Eight out of every ten
people on earth suffer from back ache

swinging gracefully through the trees
or rummaging around on all fours.
All these aching backs have produc-
ed a multitude of books and magazine
articles on the subject, but as far as
I'm concerned, the only people real-
ly qualified to become experts are the
sufferers themselves.
Yet, everyone is an authority; a
woman 1 know, who doesn't even
know she has a back, always insists
if I did this or that exercise I would
be up and around in no time flat. But
1 still stick to what one doctor told me,
years ago, when I was experiencing
a particularly bad session, "If it
hurts, don't exercise".
The trouble is there are so many
reasons for back pain... muscle con-
traction, herniated disc, facet joint
syndrome, to name only a few. The
sufferer is confronted with a baffling
choice of therapies, and must try to
find the one that works for him.
When these attacks began I was ter-
rified that ti wheel chair was waiting
for me a short way down the line.
However, the years have taught me
better, and I know that no matter how
severe the attack, it always corrects
itself within three weeks .t usually
sooner l , regardless of what I de. So,
my favourite therapy is to gulp down
the pain killers, take td my bed with
the hot water bottle, and wait for
nature to take its course.
When the pain recedes, to stave off
the next attack, I try to remember to
practice good posture and relaxation,
to lift objects in the correct way. and
exercise properly.
However, it seems to me that the
organ that needs the most exercising
is my brain which knows perfectly
well I should never lift my legs and
slowly lower them to the floor.

Women at Caven
hold thankoffering
The spring thankoffering meeting
of Caven PCW was held Monday
evening with Mrs. Clifford Ersman
presiding.
The theme of the worship service
"The loving forgiving Saviour". This
meaningful service was conducted by
Mrs. S. Laing, Mrs. N. Stanlake. Mrs.
Taylor and Mrs. 11 Strang with Mrs.
Iles at the piano. Every Easter as we
read the glorious story of the crucifix-
ion and resurrection of the Christ. We
marvel again and again at the wonder
of God's grace. He loves us so much
He sent a Saviour.
Rev. McKnight screened a film
with commentary "Even though we
are not blooming now". From this we
know that the Koreans in spite of their
long history of oppression, are most-
ly a happy people with a great sense
of humour. Mrs. Charles Henderson
played a recording of Korean adults
singing "How Great Thou Art" and
"What a friend we have in Jesus".
Our Presbyterial visitor will be
Mrs. Robert McColl of Goderich. In-
vitations have been received from
Stratford St. Andrews to attend their
100th Anniversary of the WMS on May
14 and from Seaforth to attend their
thankoffering April 25.
The spring rally will be held in
Goderich en May 8 when Huron
Presbyterial will celebrate 1W years.
