Mary's Musings
When our daughter, Chelsey was
born. friends gave us a bottle of
champagne. It was, of course. pink
champagne to celebrate the birth of
our daughter. But even though I spent
New Year's eve in the hospital the
champagne was never opened.
Tonight we are going to pop that
cork and celebrate. This is a big day
in Chelsey's short life.
You see. Chelsey was born with
what the doctors called a "congenital
hip defect" --- it's really just a
dislocated hip. So for the first three
months of her life, she has-been wear-
ing a splint to keep her hip in place
while the bones grow properly. And
today we can take off that splint.
Hip defects are not as uncommon
as you may think. They occur fre-
quently and are found mostly in baby
girls. Doctors always check newborns
for hip defects by moving their legs
outward in a frog -like motion.
Chelsey's hip joint made a clicking
noise when the doctor moved it, in-
dicating that the ball and socket of the
hip were not formed together proper-
ly. Because a new born baby's bones
are very soft. a hip defect can be easi-
ly corrected if at is caught at birth.
The hip has to be immobilized in a
frog-leg position for three months.
The doctors say that 90 days is the
magic number when it comes to cor-
recting hip defects -- while It appears
that the hip could be in place much
sooner if the leg is immobilized for 90
days, the doctors will promise that it
will not cause further problems.
I think most Moms -to -be spend the
nine months worryi(ig about having a
healthy baby. I read up on Down's
Syndrome. Spina Bifida and other
handicaps. it is a great relief to see
a tiny perfect baby in the delivery
room. Unfortunately the bubble was
burst just a few hours later when the
pediatrician said her hip was
dislocated.
At the time, I was devastated,
especially when I saw Chelsey being
put into the splint. But the doctor took
1
By Mary Alderson
me aside, and told me that in three
months I would be able to say, "It
wasn't so bad."
And he was right -- it hasn't been so
bad at all. Certainly it hasn't bothered
Chelsey. She's a very good natured,
happy baby.
Chelsey has been put in a Malmo
splint. It is a device made of plastic -
covered metal which can be bent to
enlarge it as she grows. It covers her
back. with extentions over her
shoulders, around her sides and from
the bottom up over her legs to keep
them "frogged". We can easily slip
her shoulders and waist out of it, to
put on undershirts. Diapers slip
underneath it, too, but sleepers or
nighties are worn over top. Her legs
have never been out of it since it was
put on when she was- a day ofd. She
has only had sponge baths, but with
some maneuvering It can be done
easily.
My only complaint with the Malmo
splint is that it has some rough edges
which I have to keep covered with
"mole skin". This splint, I have learn-
ed, is far superior to the plaster casts,
harnesses and braces which used to
be the norm for hip defects.
Sure it's been awkward and clum-
sy. It may take me a little longer to
change a diaper, but with the frequent
practise it wasn't so difficult. There
are drawbacks -- she couldn't sit in a
car seat or lounge chair. or use a
Snuggli or stroller. But she's been
travelling quite nicely in a wicker
hassinette and her Dad constructed a
special chair for her. She can only
sleep flat qn her back. but that hasn't
bothered her.
We can hardly wait to see her reac-
tion to being splint -less. We're excited
about sitting her up in a car seat or
taking her out in the stroller. Mom
and Dad are going to have to learn
about handling a baby all over again.
because there's not going to be any
convenient corners to hang on to. And
we're very, very thankful for our
healthy girl.
