A little organizing turns old clothes into a new
Today. I cleaned out my clothes
closet. I want to tell you it was an ex-
ercise in exhaustion, and came about
only because a friend invited me to
accompany her to four sessions on
wardrobe planning. Now, this is a
joke, since my only wardrobe plan
has been to grab something off the
sale s rack when the price gets down
to where I can afford it.
Not that I don't like clothes. I do.
My mother was a fashion plate, in her
day, and while I certainly never
reached her level of stylishness, she
did instill in me an appreciation for
the well dressed woman. Another
lady, who had some influence in my
past, never so much as took a morn-
ing stroll to the post office without be-
ing dressed to the nines, complete
with wispy veiled hat and short white
gloves, because, as she used to sage-
ly comment, "You never can tell

Al the first session of wardrobe
planning, our figures were analyzed
as to type, and measured. The latter
put me in shock and convinced me the
reason my pants and skirts were get-
ting so hard to fasten was not because
I left them in the dryer too long as I
had thought.
Our charming consultant offered
suggestions as to what style of
garments were best for our figure
types, and then gave us our first
assignment, cleaning -out and organiz-
ing our clothes closets. "If you have
something hanging there you haven't
worn tor two years, it probably isn't
you. anymore ... better get rid of it."
Sinee most of my apparel was in
that category 1 armed myself with
two large garbage bags and opened
the closet door. "Oh no, not that!"
The first thing my eye fell on was a
.knitted wool suit, made in Italy, which
I bought a dozen years ago but
haven't worn in four. Sure, I had pur-
chased it on sale, but had always felt
so elegant in it, I just couldn't give it
up. A second thought occurred to try
it on, and that did it. With all the
lumps and bumps in the wrong
places, I looked like a sackful of
unorganized soccer balls. With a
heavy sigh, I dropped the suit on the

sorted and tried on, but I think my lit-
tle consultant will be dismayed when
she learns, next session, that I could
discard almost nothing. There's
always the off chance the styles in my
closet will come back in fashion, that
1 might lose weight, or, maybe even
get invited to a Hallowe'en mas-
querade party. I did agree that a pair
of hot pink pants weren't exactly me,
anymore (never were/. and the same
wardrobe
went for a frilly, frumpy blouse and
skirt someone had dumped on me
when they cleaned out their closet.
As our leader advised, however, I
did organize my clothes, hanging all
the skirts, shirts, dresses, etc.,
(regardless of vintage/ together.
Some things went to the cleaners,
others were mended, shortened or
lengthened. My closet is now a joy to
behold, and never looked so good.
Seems to me I just might get by
for another ten years.
