Times-Advocate, 1985-04-03, Page 23Page 2A Times -Advocate, April 3, 1985 South Huron gymnasts dominate conference test South Huron's gymnastics squad enjoyed a very successful day at the Huron -Perth meet last week and were very optimistic of their chances of regaining the WOSSA title yesterday i'l'uesday 1. Due to the fact that only two schools participated in the conference meet, no team championship was awarded. Local girls did claim all three of the individual awards. Patty O'Toole was the junior in- dividual champ, finishing the four events with a 31.4 point total. Runners-up in the junior division were Sarah Patterson in second, Laurie Forrester in third and Karen Hoffman in fourth position. In the intermediate category, Carol Morrissey claimed the individual ti- tle while Ronalyn Bell was runner-up. Mary Martens completed the day in fourth place behind Norwell's Theresa Donaldson. The only competition South Huron's senior gymnasts received was from themselves. Norwell sent no senior competitors and left the local com- petitors Lee O'Rourke. Rosemary Morrissey, and Jacqui Cottrell to finish first, second and third respectively. Ronalyn Bell was the winner of the intermediate beam with a score of 8.0. Carole Morrissey and Leanne Jen- nison finished second and fourth respectively. Results for the junior beam were Pally O'Toole, first, with a score of 8.4; Sarah Patterson, second; and Lisa Birmingham in fourth. In the senior beam competition, Lee O'Rourke claimed first with a score of 8 and was followed by Cottrell and Rosemary Morrissey. The junior,floor winner was Kerrin Mehagan with a score of 8 4 while Patty O'Toole, Sarah Patterson, and Lisa Birmingham finished second, third and fourth respectively. Barb Lawson was the intermediate floor champ. Ronalyn Bell and Carole Morrissey finished behind Lawson respectively. Jacqui Cottrell scored a 9.1 on the senior floor and was followed by O'Rourke with an 8.4 and Rosemary Morrissey with a 7.4. South Huron finished exceptionally well in the bars. Patty O'Toole was the junior winner and was followed by Patterson, Forrester and Lisa Birm- ingham. In the intermediate bars, Carole Morrissey scored an 8.3 and was followed by Kim Boogemans, se- cond; Ronalyn Bell, third; and Mary Martens in fourth. Laurie Forrester was the leading competitor in the junior vault. Patter- son, O'Toole and Karen Hoffman finished behind Forrester in second, third and fourth respectively. Kim Boogemans was the in- termediate vault winner with a 7.9 score. Martens and Lawson finished third and fourth respectively. Lee O'Rourke was the senior vault winner with a score of 8.8 and was followed by Cottrell with a 8.6 and Rosemary Morrissey in third. Twelve schools will send represen- tatives to the WOSSA competiton. South Huron's competition for the team title will come from Tillsonburg the only other full squad in the competition. TOP INDIVIDUALS — Three members of the SHDHS gymnastic team also took individual honors in Thursday's Huron -Perth conference championship. GOOD FORM – Although this was only a warm-up, Patti O'Toole was in fine form and took one of the individual cham- pionships of Thursday's Huron - Perth conference gymnastics championship. Hurondale WI visit Europe Hurondale Institute held their March meeting March 27 at Caven Church beginning with the Institute Grace and dessert, followed by the regular meeting. Roll call was: name a cherished possession handed down and bring it with you. Tell Time featured Margaret Strang telling o1 being back to her former home near Toronto and atten- ding an Institute meeting with old friends. Lois McF'alls reported 2n the an- nual meeting to be held April 24 at Ex- eter United Church at 5 p.m. with sup- per 6:30. Please let her know by April 17 if you plan to attend. A motion by Laura Sillery was seconded by Marion Dougall that we take a bus trip June 26 to Black Creek Village and Cullen Garden. The District annual will be at Elim- ville May 16. A committee of Ila Love, Ila Moir and Alma Etherington will gather crafts and baked goods to be sold at the Crafty Corner. The group provide the luncheon for the Fall Rally at Thames Road Church October 7. Helen Hodgert and Marion Dougall will attend the Rural Seminar in Brussels, April 10. Only one other team competed in the conference championship, which will be the last one due to the lace of interest in high schools. Yesterday, the girls competed for their fifth straight WOSSA championship.
