Resort reeve makes PC bid
Grand Bend Reeve Bob Sharen has
jumped into the battle to succeed
Lorne Henderson, who announced his
retirement from provincial politics.
The PC nomination was held in
Petrolia on Tuesday evening (last
night ). Two bus loads from the village
travelled to Petrolia to back Sharen.
Sharen has considerable ex-
perience in municipal politics. For the
past 12 years he has been the reeve
for Grand Bend. He was first elected
to council in 1973, becoming reeve the
same year. Sharen has also served on
the Lambton county council during
that term and is involved in numerous
community events.
Verna and Bob have four children.
Their eldest daughter, Colleen, is in
her final year of an honors program
at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University, ma-
joring in political science_ Colleen was
nominated Youth Delegate in
January '85 at the PC leadership con-
vention in Toronto. Daughter Patricia
is in her first year.of advertising at
Sheridan College. Andrew and Jenny
are still at home attending public
school in the village.
The Sharens have -resided in
Southcott Pines:since 1974. Bob has
served in the Canadian Forces
Canter canvass starts,
special events planned
The Grand Bend Cancer Society
has started their 198.5 campaign which
got under way on Monday, April 1.
Last season they raised over $4800
through canvassing, selling fresh daf-

area businesses and a bowlathon.
President of the Lambton Cancer
Unit, Bob Broad, reported that the
fresh daffodils will be available on
April 12 and 13 this year. Just in time
for Daffodil Sunday on the 14th., they_
will be selling in bunches of 8 or 10 for
$2.00. Grand Bend will receive 200
bunches.
A new event, sponsored by the GB
C.W.1,., the bowling for cancer has
been an excellent supporter of the
campaign for the past two years.
Members raised over $975.00 'their
first year at the Zurich lanes.
On the GB executive are president,
Case Stokkermans; treasurer and
canvassing captain, Lynne Desjar-
dine; education. Marj Mason; patient
services, Irene Kennedy; daffodil
sales, Nancy Thomas; bowlathon,
Rose VanBruaene; and the Great
Pinery Ride, Lydia Duchou.

The March meeting of the GB Or-
pha club was held in the home of Marj
Mason with eleven attending. After
the social time, Dorothy Cutting open-
ed with a reading "Priceless Gift".
President. Irene Kennedy presided
for the business part. Everyone is to
bring their donations for the
Children's Aid to the next meeting.
Dorothy and Mildred Maclaren were
chosen to purchase some baby clothes
for donating.
It was agreed that the club would
send $10.00 to the Bunny Bundle. An
article from the Readers Digest
"Laughter is the Best Medicine" was
read aloud. Irene Kennedy read
"Reverees in a Garden".
The next meeting will be at Dorothy
Cutting's on Monday, April 29 at 2:00.
Palm Sunday
On Sunday morning at the United
Church, Rev. Peebles observed the
Sacrament of Holy.Communion. On
this Palm Sunday he said that we all
have a mission to follow the Master's
good example which he set for us.
Don Kobe read from the books of
Daniel 4 and John 6:3-14. The Junior
choir sang "Hosanna" for the special
music time.
Flowers around the pulpit were
placed in memory of Cecil Lovie by
his family and Bob Johnston by his
wife.
Don't forget the Good Friday ser-
vice at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Sut-
ton speaking. The Easter Sunrise ser-
vice and breakfast will be this Sun-
day, April 7 at 7:30 a.m. Tickets are
available from Couples Club
members.
All ladies are welcome to the
Easter Ecumenical on Tuesday, April
9 at 8:00 p.m. Miss Vivian Grant, Lon-
don, will be the guest speaker.

firms in Ontario and Manitoba. In
1970 Bob returned to this area to take
over,the family business from his ail-
ing father. Since then, the Sharen
Real Estate firm has built up a well-
established business in Grand Bend.
Wins Nomination
Jeff Rice, nephew of Lou Rice, was
chosen as the Progressive Conser-
vative candidate to replace Bill Davis
in the riding of Brampton. Lou is the
owner of Grand Cove Estates Retire-
ment Community in Grand Bend.
In a hotly contested race between
three candidates, which brought out
more than 4000 people to the meeting,
Jeff ran on a platform of open govern-
ment and youthful vitality. Shortly
after his nomination, the media
started referring to him as "The Whiz
Kid".
Lou Rice indicated that he is
delighted with his nephew's decision
to enter publice life. "Our family has
always been actively involved in com-
munities throughout Ontario. Jeff has
always been concerned with people,
and I know that he will actively de-
fend the right of each individual in
this province to live with pride and
dignity," he commented.
Singer Sew-rs
At the fourth meeting the 4-H girls
picked the name "Singer Sew-rs for
the club. The roll call was answered
by everyone telling the alterations for
their own pattern.
Patterns were pinned on the fabric
and they learned about the grain line
and markings. The members cut out
their action wear garments and learn-
ed about seams.
Each girl did some sample seams
and learned how to straight stitch and
stretch their fabric gently.
Their home assignment was to
press and mount the seam sample in
note books.
The fifth meeting was held at leader
Mrs. Loreen Gill's. The roll call to
show their samples mounted in the
notebooks was completed.
The girls were introduced to the use
of the sewing machine, seams, ribb-
ing trim and mount them in books.
The home activity was to prepare
their garment for ribbing and apply
it.
For meeting number six, the 4-II'rs
learned how to finish their garments.
Some members inserted elastic waist
bands and others finished the neck
line. They learned what casing is and
how to hem. Some of the more ex-
perienced sewers did their piping
sample. At the end of the meeting
everyone played a memory game and
enjoyed tasty Easter eggs. Leanne
Jennison reports the next meeting
will be on Monday night at Loreen
Gill's home.
Alhambra News
Five couples from Grand Bend
Algarva 168 attended a special
weekend celebration in Windsor.
The session began with mass on
Saturday evening, followed by a
delicious six -course meal. The even-
ing concluded with speeches and
presentations and dancing for
everyone. The evening is called the
Past Grand Commander's Ball and is
followed by further hospitality at the
hotel into the wee hours.
A Council of Caravans meeting was
held on Saturday morning, with the
main topic being the possibility of
holding the 1987 international conven-
tion of the Alhambra in Windsor. The
help of all the local caravans is being
sought.
A beautiful lunch was served by the
SUltanas, then everyone headed for
home. Those attending were Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Vandenberk, Mr. and Mrs.
Cor Vandenberk, Mr. and Mrs. Philip
Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Marty Kelders,
and Mr. and Mrs. John Smits.
Plan Election Night .
The CWL held a meeting on March
18 at the Alhambra Hall with about 30
ladies attending. Antoinette Pachlarz,
president, chaired the business. Rose
VanBruane read from the CWL con-
stitution regarding nominations and
election. Instructions on filling out
nomination forms are going to be
passed out at church. April 15 will be
election night for a new slate of of-
ficers and conveners.
An invitation was extended to at-
tend the Easter Ecumenical at the
United Church on Tuesday evening,
April 9 at 8:00 p.m.
The prizes for the summer raffle
are being completed. First prize is a
quilt. second a handmade sweater
and third prize will be a baby quilt.
Various donations were made to close
the term of office. Five hundred
dollars was sent to Development and
Peace.
April 16 will be the night to go bowl-
ing for cancer 7:30 to 9:30 p.in. in
Zurich with Carol Luther in charge.
Remember to pick up your pledge
sheets on Sunday. The diocese con-
vention will be held in London this
year, on May 7 and 8, at the Hamp-
ton Court Motel. Please make reser-
vations early.
On Wednesday, March 20 a Day of
Recollection was held for the ladies
of our parish. At the Alhambra Hall,
CWL members were invited from Mt.
Carmel, St. Boniface and Parkhill.
Sister Julia, former Superior of the
nuns of St. Joseph, London, was the
- guest speaker. Father Morrissey of-
fered prayers, the communal rosary
and a mass for the ladies.
Lunch D group will be in charge of
the election meeting on April 15, so
come out and cast your votes!!
