Legion picks speaking winners

"Preparing for Adolescence" deals
with the topics of "Peer Pressure and
Sexuality" on Tuesday, April 2 at the
same 7:30 hour. The topic for April 9
is "What Wives Wish Husbands knew
about Women - the Lonely
Housewife". All are invited to attend
the remaining films of this series.
Officers of the Lucan detachment of
the Ontario Provincial Police in-
vestigated three accidents this week
with damages totalling $16,325. All oc-
curred Sulnday.
The first at 4 a.m. occurred when
Norman Shannon, RR 3 Lucan, fell
asleep and his vehicle left Highway
23. Constable Briggs set damages at
$2.800.
At 10:50 p.m. a vehicle •driven by
Roderick Betteridge, St. Marys
skidded on an icy section of Middlesex
road 27 and struck an unattended
vehicle in a private driveway.
Damages were listed at $10,500 by
Constable Vance.
In a similar incident because of icy
road conditions, a vehicle driven by
Sandra Henderson, Mitchell struck a
tree on highway 23. Constable Mar-
shall estimated damages at $3,025.
"Fashions for Seniors"
The annual showing of "Fashions
for Seniors", sponsored by the Sun-
shine and Busy Buddies groups, was
held in the optimist Clubrooms on Fri-
day afternoon.
June Laxton of London, was the
commentator for the many exciting
styles of dresses, suits, blouses, etc.,
from "Fashion Network", modelled
by members Muriel Cobleigh, Hazel
Williams, Marion Noels, Laura
Williams and Audrey Hodgins, as well
as Dorothy Wallis who added greatly
to the show, and a friend of Mrs. Lax-
ton, Rosa Robbins, of London.
Several members contlributed
"goodies" for the afternoon tea with

meeting was held March 27 at the Op-
timist Clubrooms in the Masonic Hall,
with president Bernice Lockyer
presiding.
Mrs. Lockyer opened the meeting
by reading a poem "March Field",
and announced the Middlesex North
District annual to be held at Melville
United Church, Ivan, Thursday, May.
23, the District Bus Trip to the Erland
Lee Homestead on Monday, June 3
and the annual Blood Donor Clinic at
the Lucan Community Centre, Tues-
day, April 23.
Donations of a Canadian flag to a
classroom in the Biddulph building,
cash toward prizes at the Science Fair
and cash to the helping hands toward
expenses of a "Foot Clinic", were all
approved.
The roll call "What legacy do you
wish to leave your grandchildren"
proved most interesting and the pro-
gram "Your Family - My Family"
convened by Mabel Froats, Convener
for Family and Consumer Affairs, in-
cluded a poem "What is a Home", an
article from a 1981 Home and Coun-
try "Will you leave a Legacy'". a
recipe for "Peace in the World," all
given by Mrs. Froats and an article
by Dr. Howard Seiden, M.D. entitled
"Immortality", was read by Bernice
Lockyer.
Flora Roberson read a beautiful
poem "A Grandmother's Patient
Love" which was written by a 16 year
old girl as a tribute to her grand-
mother and published in
"Encounter."
For the consumer angle of the pro-
gram Mrs. Froats reviewed con-
sumer signs and shapes. gave hints on
how to pack up your own groceries in
a super store and the "facts and
fal:xEs" about nutrition.
Pennies for Friendship contrihu-
cousin."
Residents of the Villa are produc-
ing a cookbook and members and
friends are invited to share their
favourite recipes. Proceeds will be us-
ed for residents' projects.
The April meeting will be held on
the third Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the
optimist Clubrooms and members are
reminded to bring topics which will be
placed in a "hat" and draws made
from which each person will speak for
30 seconds.
Topics may be "silly or serious",
"old tyme or modern or even
futuristic," whatever! Written Con-
vener reports in triplicate, on 8,2" by
11" paper are also to be presented.
Refreshments were served by Ber-
nice Lockyer.
Dorcas unit, U.C.W.
Ruthanne Curtis led in a devotional
.service appropriate to the Lenten
season at the Dorcas Unit meeting,
United Church Women, Tuesday
afternoon. She told four short stories
illustrating various aspects of the
significance of the Cross for our lives.
Unit Leader Marj Park took the
chair for the business session. Iva
llodgins reported on Mrs. Pitt's 90th
birthday celebration for which the
unit catered, and passed on Mrs.
Pitt's thanks for the happy occasion.
Marj reminded the ladies of the Focus
on the Family film series presently in
progress on Tuesday evenings, and
announced the Regional U.C.W. Ral-
ly for May 1 at Carlyle. Birthday con-
gratulations were extended to Mrs.
Lillian Brown.
Flora Robertson and Marion Lee
provided lunch for the social time
which concluded the meeting.

"K.P." duty.
Mrs. Laxton was thanked by a past -
president, Mildred Hirtzel and door
prizes, donated by -Mrs. Laxton were
won by Dorothy Young and Marjorie
Park.
Thanks to all who helped and
special thanks to Brett Buchart and
two of his friends who assisted in set-
ting up the Clubroom ready for the
show and rearranging it afterward,
also to Yvonne Pike and Len Maslen
for taped music played during the
show.
The committee for the occasion in-
cluded Hazel Williams, Muriel
Cobleigh and Iva Hodgins.
Br.540 Royal Canadian Legion
Lucan
March 28, Branch 540 held their an-
nual Public Speaking contest, and
again it was a close contest, with the
winners- of each , group going on to
Zone finals at Parkhill, March 30.
Grades four to six winners were
Amy Sullivan, Kevin Darling and tied
for third place were Melissa O'Leary
and Brian Jewell.
Grades seven and eight the winner
was Elaine Toohey, tied for second
were Bill Kelly and Julie Lewis, with
Carey Hayter placing, third. Con-
gratulations to you all.
Once again Comrades I remind you
of the importance of our April and
May general meetings. It is election
of officer time, so get to the meetings
and make your choice, and help to get
him or her into the office. If you don't
take your part in this most important
part of our Legion activities, you have
little or no right to complain
afterwards.

Lucan United.Church Couples' Club
Vice-chairman Gord Froats was in
the chair Thursday evening at Lucan
United Church Couples' Club March
meeting. Plans were made for the
Giant Garage and Bake Sale schedul-
ed for May 11 in Patterson's garage
on Main St.
Ed and Freeda Melanson, Wes and
Helen Stanley, and Anna Maguire led
in a Lenten meditation on the suffer-
ings of Christ for our redemption. The
service closed with a poem and
prayer that celebrated the victory of
Christ's Resurrection. The group then
listened to a tape containing excerpts
from Dr. James Dobson's films on
parenting and the meeting closed with
a social time over refreshments pro-
vided by the couples in charge.
Focus on the Family
Jim and Flora Robertson hosted the
fourth in Dr. James Dobson's "Focus
on the Family" film series at Lucan
United Church on Tuesday evening.
"Preparing for Adolescence - the
Origin of Self Doubt" was the topic for
the evening. Feelings of inferiority
can be devastating for Junior High
children faced with our society's im-
possible demands for perfection in
"beauty and brains."
Parents should do all they can to
counter these false values and to build
the self-esteem of their children.
Parents can prepare their pre -teen
boys and girls for the storms of
adolescence by planning a special
"one-to-one" time away with the child
to talk about the various aspects of
this transition, and to assure them of

Sunshine and Busy Buddies
At Thursdays Sunshine and Buy
Buddies meeting Elmer Huffman
asked that we invite the Parkhill
Seniors to the April 11 dessert euchre
at 1:30 p.m. along with the seniors
from Ailsa Craig and Granton.
Tickets were given out, the sale of
quilt tickets to be drawn at Lucan
Fair. The quilt was on display for
members to see.
Mabel Froats, tour convener, noted
several suggestions have been given
her, she will explore these further as
to what is available and report back
next week.
May Davis gave a humorous
reading entitled "The Inventor's
Wife". A sing song followed led by
Mable Froats. Muriel Cobleigh was at
the piano.
Iva Hodgins was the craft prize
winner. Prizes for euchre went to
Ladies' High - Margaret Carter;
Ladies' Lones - Mary Kooy, Ladies'
Low - Mary Davis. Gent's High -
Hamilton Hodgins, Gent's Lones - Ed
Dowdall, Gent's Low - Ed Armstrong.
United Church
As the Lord's Supper was
celebrated Sunday morning at Lucan
United Church, Dennis and Linda
Hackney, and Pamela Orchard were
welcomed into the fellowship of the
congregation. A highlight of the ser-
vice was a beautiful solo by Flora
Robertson on the theme of Christ's re-
jection, "Nobody wanted Him; No
one cared."
Christ's words from the Cross,
"They know not what they do" was
Mr. Brown's text for the morning.
Ed Melanson read the Scripture,
and along with seven other elders,
distributed the bread and the wine.
Diane Morrison took the children for
their Junior Congregation time, and
Bill and Gord Froats formed the
welcome committee for the day. Two
beautiful Easter lilies were placed in
the sanctuary in loving memory of
Mr. George Thomson and of Mrs..
Rachel Tuke.
Coming Events
- A quilt will be in place in the C.E.
Wing this week, and all quitters are
invited to participate. Lucan choir
has changed their Easter practice
time to 7 p.m. Wednesday evening,
for this week only. At 8 p.m., the
General U.C.W. meets in the C.E.
wing. A special Easter Thankoffering
goes to assist the hungry in Africa by
means of the "Seeds for Zaire"
programme.
The Prayer and Share Fellowship
meets Thursday morning to continue
its study of Luke's Gospel. That even-
ing at 8 p.m., the Official Board of
Clandeboye-Lucan Pastoral Charge
meets in the C.E. Wing. Friday mor-
ning at 8 a.m. the Young People's
class will conduct a Good Friday ser-
vice. All are invited to participate and
to attend the Breakfast following with
which the Senior Adult Class will
assist.
Aspecial Easter Worship service is
planned for next Sunday. The annual
spring hot beef supper is set for
Thursday, April 18, 5-7 p.m. at the
arena. Tickets are available from
U.C.W. members at $6. for adults and
$3. for children. Pre-schoolers will be
admitted free.
