This time the Mohawks find themselves behind the Woodford Royals three games to one in a best - of -seven series to decide which club will win the Western Ontario Athletic Association Intermediate "A" cham- pionship trophy'. After the Royals had taken the first game a week earlier. the Exeter club evened the series on home ice Wednesday night with a 7-5 decision. Back in Owen Sound Friday night. the Woodford team took a one game series edge with a 4-2 decision and Sunday night in Exeter they won by a 7-4 score. T -A photo Motocross is underway The motorcross season has once again began at HuIIy Gully. This year CRC Productions of Clinton has taken over the track facility operations at Ilully Gully. The season is starting off with two - one day motocross clinics, which will be covering everything from getting in shape to bike maintenance. Safety tips and track technique and theory, how to prevent rider injuries and also on the bike instructions and seminars. Bikes will be properly adjusted and set up to riders size and track condi- tions. Handouts, video tapes and a hearty lunch will be provided. The clinic will also be held April 13 and both clinics start at 9 a.m. and the fee is $35 a student. The racing action starts April 21 at 10:30 with the first sanctioned motocross race and on the 27th the first Houseleague race will be held with open practice and registration For further information please con tact Chuck Collins at CRC at P.O. Early Goals Wednesday In the second game of the series Wednesday the Mohawks started off as if they were going to run away and hide with four goals in the first period. The game was less than three minutes old when Ken Varley con- verted a pass from Barry Baynham to put the locals out in front quickly. At 7:14, Jamie Caldwell made it 2-0 on a three-way combination with Terry Caldwell and Ken Varley. Seven minutes later, defencernan Dave Kinsman hit the Woodford net on passes from Pete Tuckey and Ran- dy Kraut and Rick Lindenfield com- pleted the opening frame scoring with assists going to Tuckey and Jim Guenther. In the second session, Woodford re- bounded a bit with four goals while the Mohawks could fire only one suc- cessful shot. The only middle period Exeter score came on -a nice effort. Cam Doig carried the puck the length of the ice, went back of the Woodford net and sent the puck back to the blueline to Randy Kraut who fired a shot on goal. Brian Mercer was right on the spot to score on the rebound. Brian Jones counted two of Wood - ford's second period scores. T -A photo Capture 'A' championship Stephen tykes win honors The Stephen Township tykes won the 'A' division of the Tri -County South Tier - 2 hockey league tourna- ment. Sunday. They defeated Zurich. Friday 7-3. then Saturday they defeated Clinton 4-1 and in the final edged Hensall 2-1. In the opening game against Zurich, Jeff Glavin and Matthew Glavin each scored twice, with single markers going to Mike Bowerman, Craig Glavin. and Kurt Mills. In Saturdays 4-1 win over Clinton, Jason Glavin turned in an excellent performance in goal making several difficult stops, including two breakaway saves. Scoring for Stephen were Jeff Glavin with two goals and single goals to Mike Bowerman and John Rutten. Glavin and Rutten also added one assist each along with Craig Glavin, Kurt Mills and Darryl Parsons. Jason Riley scored the lone Clinton goal. In Sundays final championship game against Hensall it was a close fought battle, with each team failing to score in the first period due to some good goal tending at both ends by Jason Glavin for Stephen and Lance Jim Nixon Motors Moin St South 235 775E Wiess from Hensall. In the second period Jeff Glavin the outstanding young tyke player for Stephen took over and scored on two solo efforts less than one minute apart, with 3:13 left in the second period Mark Bell scored for Hensall. The third period remained scoreless with several good oppor- tunities for each team. Thus bringing to an end a good season for the Stephen tykes playing in 16 games and losing only two games. in single fashion were Lance Kealey and Brad Underwood. Dave Kinsman scored his second goal of the night at 11;35 of the final frame on passes from Ken Varley and Tom Ryan and it appeared as if the Mohawks were home free. Brad Underwood scored at 16:08 to put (he visitors within one goal of a tie and they continued the pressure, but, Pete Tuckey picked up a pass from Brian Mercer with only 27 seconds left and hit the empty net. The game was a rough and chippy affair with referee Don Freeman han- ding out a total of 48 penalties. Wood- ford took 28 of the calls including a gross misconduct to Bill Madill. Few Penalties In Owen Sound Friday night, referee Dan O'Kane had a quiet time calling only five minor penalties to each club and none figured in the scoring. Each team scored single goals in the first two periods and Royals not- ched two unanswered scores in the final 20 minutes of play to take the vic- tory and a one game lead in the series. In the opening session, Pete Tuckey was the Exeter marksman- on an unassisted effort and captain Don McLeod replied for the Royals. ©ave Kinsman converted a pass from Ken Varley to account for the Mohawks second period scoring and Bev Davidson was the Woodford marksman. Scoring the two Woodford markers in the final session were Brian Fair - man and Bev Davidson. Royals Win in First Sunday night, the Royals took a page from the Mohawks book of Wednesday night and took a 5-1 lead by the end of the first period. Bev Davidson was a double scorer for the visitors and Doug Wilson, Brian Jones and Brian Dean notched singles. Dave Atthill tallied the only first frame Exeter goal on passes from Dave Kinsman and Pete Tuckey. Goals were scarcer in the middle stanza. Barry Baynham hit for the Mohawks on a pass from • Randy Kraut and Brian Jones retaliated for Woodford.
