young people honored
One of those honoured at the On-
tario Youth Awards on Friday was a
young woman from a beef farm near
Elimville, Elaine Pym.
Pym won the award for her seven-
year involvement with 4-11, and her
continuing work as a 4-H leader. She
is also a member of the Junior
Farmers Association.
Pym was one of 47 young people
from communities in Southwestern
Ontario recognized Friday at a dinner
in London. They were all presented
with the Ontario Youth Medal by Phil
Gillies, the Minister for Youth for the
Ontario Government.
The presentation is part of the pro-
vince's celebration of International
Youth Year. A total of 500 young peo-
ple, aged 15 to 24, were honoured in

seven ceremonies throughout the pro-
vince during the month of March.
Pym first became a member of 4-11
when she was 12. She has held all the
executive positions in 4-11 and receiv-
ed numerous awards. After age 19,
she became a 4-11 leader. She spent
two years leading 4-11 clubs, especial-
ly beef and youth leadership groups,
and plans to continue.
Pym joined Junior Farmers at 16,
and is still an active member. Now 23
years of age, Pym is a student of
agribusiness at the University of
Guelph. She would like to farm even-
tually. "I'm interested in working in
the farm industry, particularly in
farm management and financial
management." She sees youth
agriculture work as an alternative
career, at least in the short term.
At Guelph, Pym has already com-
pleted the two-year diploma program.
She is now in her third year of the
four-year degree program, and is the
incoming president of the Ontario
Agriculture College Student Federa-
tion. "I'm active in lots of things at
school," Pym says, citing intramural
sports and organizing an open house
weekend as examples.
As part of her association with
Junior Farmers, Pym sits on a na-
tional rural youth committee. -We
want to form a youth organization
across Canada," she says.
Pym is representative of the group
being honoured. Other youth receiv-
ing the award have been involved in
organizations such as Junior Achieve-
ment, St. John Ambulance, Red Cross
Youth, and the Memorial Boys' and
Girls' Club of London.
