Home
to Braves, Thursday
The Tavistock Braves have used
home ice advantage to built a 2-1 lead
over the Exeter Hawks in their best -
of -seven northern division semi-final.
However, all three games have
been close battles and fans should be
in for some exciting hockey as the
series wraps up this week.
The Braves opened the series with
an 8-6 win at home on Thursday, while
the Hawks rebounded to knot the set
with a 5-3 victory in Hensall, Sunday.
Monday night,' the Braves regained
the upper hand as they scored three
times in overtime to post an 8-5
verdict_
The Hawks will host the Braves at
the rec centre on Thursday and then
travel back to Tavistock on Friday for
the fifth game. If a sixth game is
needed, it will be played in Exeter on
Sunday night and the seventh is slated
for the Braves home ice on Monday.
The Braves had protested Sunday's
Toss in Hensel! due to the fact assis-
tant coach Bob Zimmer's name had
not been on the game report.
t[owever, word on Monday was that
the protest would not be entertained.
If the Hawks lose on home ice,
Thursday, it could be their final ap-
pearance of the year. It could also be
the final home game -in the junior
careers of several squad members.
All three gatnes have been evenly
played to date, but the Hawks will
have to stop league scoring leader
Kevin Albrecht in Tavistock if they
hope to advance in further playoff ac-
tion. Albrecht has scored three goals
in each of his two home games.
Extra action
Both squads rallied from deficits to
send Monday's third game into over-
time and the Braves scored three
times in the extra session to post their
8-5 triumph.
The Hawks led 2-1 after the first and
still had that one -goal margin at the
end of two, but the Braves pulled even
after 40 seconds of play in the third
when they scored on a short-handed
effort.
Exeter regained the lead at the 3:17
mark, but the Braves then stormed
back to take a 5-4 margin with less
than six minutes to -play. The Hawks
evened -the count with just under three
minutes to go.
Ovetime was less than three
minutes old when Terry Ross scored
the winner and the Braves added two
more, one into an empty net, to recap-
ture the series lead.
Bill Glover scored twice for the
Hawks, with the singles coming off
the sticks of Jeff Rowe, Mike Clark
and Steve Batten. Clark added three
assists to lead in that department.
with
t e ors , Scott Bogart, Don
Hamilton; Brian Miter, Ted Hodgins
and Glover.
.League scoring leader Kevin
Albrecht and last year's MVP Terry
Ross figured in all eight Tavistock
goals. Albrecht had three markers
and five assists, while Ross scored
twice and had two assists.
The Hawks had yet to find a way to
stop the duo.
Goalies Pete Dearing and Mike
Oliver again faced a barrage of shots
in the wide-open contest. Oliver
finished with 44 saves and Dearing
had 40. Dearing kept the I hawks in the
game in the first as he stopped 15
shots, while Oliver -was at his best in
the third when the Exeter crew pop-
ped him with 18 shots.
Both squads scored two powerplay
markers as each recorded 15
penalties. The total • included four
fighting majors with three seconds
left in overtime as Jeff Rowe and
Brian Horner of the Hawks squared
off with Tavistock's Terry Tomiuk
and Albrecht.
Quick start
Sunday's home ice advantage for the
Hawks was in theory only as they
were shunted to the Hensall arena due
to a tournament at the rec centre. But
the unfamiliar surroundings failed to
daunt them as they stormed to the at-
tack in the first period and built up a
two -goal lead that they managed to
protect through most of the contest
for a 5-3 triumph.
Only the nimble antics of Braves
netminder Mike Oliver kept the locals
from blowing the visitors right out of
the rink as they peppered him with 23
shots in the -opening frame.
Ted Hodgins opened the scoring at
the 3:03 mark when his point shot
found the range on a goal set up by
Scott Brintnell and Trevor.Johnston.
Jeff Pfaff made it 2-0 with five
minutes left in the stanza as he
blasted a screened shot past Oliver on
a powerplay with Steve Prout and
Brintnell drawing the assists.
Bill Glover upped the count to 3-0 in
the first minute of the second when
he scooted down the left wing aqd
found the mark on a rising wrist shot,
but the Braves came back eight
seconds later to get their first marker
and pulled to within one at the 7:24
mark on a powerplay.
Brintnell re -opened the two -goal
lead for the Hawks on a' powerplay at
the 11:12 mark with Brian Horner and
Sean Whiteford assisting.
During the second, the Hawks
played four -against -six on two occa-
sions and weathered the storm.
The Braves pulled to within one
goal at the 6:20 mark of the third on
a powerplay and they came close on
