Women Today, a grassroots
women's organization in Huron Coun-
ty, has received a contribution of
$58,345. from Health and Welfare
Canada to fund a training program
for self-help group facilitators.
The purpose of the project, Women
Being Well, is to promote the health
of Huron County women by training
women to organize self-help groups,
which will focus on women's health
and well -ben. The program will pro-
vide the facilitators with training on
group dynamics, popular education
techniques and preventative health.
Women Today wants to encourage
a number of self-help groups in the
county to form on a wide variety of
concerns that local women will iden-
tify. The organization, believes the
best way to do this is to train women
to run self-help groups and support
them in establishing the groups they
wish to form. -
Self-help groups are already
organized in other areas of the pro-
vince, says Fran McQuail, a Women
Today board member, and groups
can form for a variety of reasons with
the focus being women's health and
well being. A self-help group could be
a social group for isolated older
women .of for young mothers, she
says. The groups will evolve as
women identify their needs.
Isolation, lack of work opportunity,
stereotype roles, family violence,
work, small children, marital rela-
tionships, lack of day care and finan-
cial problems are several of the con-
cerns local women may identify in
forming self-help groups.
The idea of self-help groups came
about following a workshop entitled
Communicating with your Doctor
held by Women Today last year. The
response to the workshop was ex-
cellent, especially from older women,
despite the poor weather conditions
the night of the workshop. The con-
cern at the workshop demonstrated a
need for all women to have alter-
native ways of achieving well being.
Women Today has worked from a
self-help and networking perspective
because it recognizes adult women
have the ability to identify and work
on solutions to their own problems
when given the forum to do so. Self
help groups are such a forum.
The objective of the training pro-
gram is to train six women, working
in pairs, to be facilitators to conduct
self help groups for women in Huron
County. The program will provide
training for facilitators in group
dynamics, community organization
skills, an awareness of the body and
• its functions, rhythms, needs and
symptoms of illness; stress factors in
women's lives and the co -relation bet-

factors that influence health and non-
medical options, alternatives and sup-
ports available in the county.
The program will be developed
through co-operation with Conestoga
College of Applied Arts and
Technology. The facilitators will take
their training through the spring and
summer months with the goal of
supervising and supporting the

Benefit recital
at Blyth Festival
The Blyth Festival welcomes Anne
McLean who will be giving a benefit
performance on February 19 at 8:00
p.m. The program, consisting of
works by Handel, Scarlatti, Haydn,
Brahms and Canadian composer Bar-
bara Pentland, is certain to delight
musical enthusiasts.
A resident of London, Anne McLean
studied piano at the University of
Calgary. She received scholarships to
continue her education in both
Salzburg and Geneva under the
guidance of Carlos Zeechi and Eduar-
do Vercelli. During this period she
preformed concerts in many parts of
Switzerland, France and Austria.
Since returning to Canada, she has
resumed her career as a soloist,
teacher and adjudicator. She has
given many recitals in western
Canada and has broadcast on CBC
radio. At present, she is completing
her doctorate in musical arts at the
University of British Columbia.
Anne McLean's performance of
work by Handel and Scarlatti is a par-
ticularly apt way to begin 198.5 on the
Blyth stage since this year marks the
tricentenary of their births. To help
celebrate, the Festival has set special
prices for this benefit: $3.00 per adult,
$5.00 per family and only $1.00 for
musiostudents. In the event of snow,
a storm date has been set for Friday
February 22 at 8:00 p.m. For ticket in-
formation call the Blyth Fesitval at
523-9300 or the Blyth Saga at 523-4345.
