Poignant piece of drama
Last night, I watched the last of the
series on ('R(', "'l'he Other Kingdom.'
the story of a woman's fight with
cancer It was a poignant piece of
drama. and one, if we haven't ex-
perienced something like it ourselves.
have certainly seen it in the lives of
people dear and close to us.
Last year, I had two good_f_dends go
into hospital for extensive tests. With
one of them, after an excruiating
wait. the results were, thankfully,
positive. and she returned home. The
other was not so fortunate. her tests
showing a malignancy for which her
doctor ordered immediate surgery.
This was her third operation in six
years. the first for cancer of the
uterus, the second for a tumor on the
brain, and last fall. a mastectomy-.
As the T\' pointed out, the most dif-
ficult time of the whole terrifying af-
fair is the intensive period of undergo-
ing the battery of clinical examina-
tions, and then waiting for the results.
Thankfully, I have good health, but a
few years ago, when 1 had to undergo
some tests. a little book, "Just in for
'Pests", by Robert W. Rae, came in-
to my hands. 1 found it comforting
then, and perhaps, some of what it
says will be helpful to others.
Rae., who has been both a patient
and a councillor to the ill. writes:
"Jesus said, 'You will know the truth
and the truth will make you free.'
(John 3:32) Applying -this statement
to your medical situation your physi-
cian is searching for truth that will
free him from faulty diagnosis. You,
also, are part of this search. You will
submit to clinical tests so that you will

be freed from impaired health, and
fear of the unknown. Although some
of these tests may be unpleasant, they
need not be dreaded. Your doctor's
objectives are to discover the cause
of your disorder and treat it so you
will enjoy sound health.
"As you submit yourself to your
doctor's care. believe that Christ the
Great Physician is ministering to
your needs through the skills of your
doctor. All of his or her training and
prior experience are preparation for
the treatment of your needs. Your life
..... .. . .......
Although, at the moment, the cancer
has been arrested, Mary lives every
day of her life knowing it can break
out again, at any time. The anger, the
fear and the bitterness, which she
niay have felt at the beginning, is long
since past. She is now the most serene
person 1 know, living each day as if
it were a gift. seeing good in
everybody, doing what she can to
alleviate the troubles of others, and
always looking for the hurnourous
side of things. I Ruby, in The Other
Kingdom. reminded me of Mary.l

is in your doctor's skillful care, but it
is also in God's care. You can pray to
God in heart-to-heart conversations,
and talk freely with Him as a child
talks over its needs with its human
father. You can express your fears,
as well as your faith to Him who made
you, and who loves you more than you
know."
The results of your tests may bring
the gift of relief from anxiety, or they
may call for corrective surgery. Be
grateful for such God-given gifts as
anesthesia, sedatives. surgeons, com-
petent therapy and the miracle of
healing.
But what if the tests reveal a ter-
minal condition? What then? Let me
tell you something about Mary, the
friend of whom I spoke who has
undergone three serious operations.
by Gwyn Whilsmith
The last time we spoke on the phone,
she was busy with church commit-
tees, and thinking of going back to her
volunteer job in the palliative care
wing of the hospital.
Mary would be the first to say the
reason she can live as she does is
because of her unshakable faith in the
goodness of God. She quotes this
scripture, which she fervently
believes: "Who shall separate us
from the love of Christ'? Shall tribula-
tion or distress, poverty or danger or •
death'?...No. in all these things we
have complete victory through Him
who loved us. For I'am sure that
neither life nor death...neither the
present nor the future...nothing in all
creation that will ever be able to
separate us from the love of God,"
(Romans 8:35,37,39)
