At Clandeboye
WI roll call on humour
The Clandeboye Women's Institute
held their January meeting at the
home of Edie Worthington. Fifteen
members answered the roll call, "A
Funny Happening in Your Life." This
roll call brought forth many funny
stories that everyone enjoyed.
The correspondence included thank
you notes from Mary Henry, Evelyn
O'Neil, Rupert Williams and Cheryl
Lynn for remembrances to them at
Christmas.
Information regarding entries to
Farm Show princess contest. plus ex-
hibits at the Farm Show were read by
secretary, June Henry.
District directors meeting will be
held February 11 in Granton. An
alternate director, hazel Cunn-
ingham, Gladys Cunningham or
Velma Hardy, will attend, weather
permitting.
Donations to War Memorial
Childrens' Hospital, 411 competition
at Ilderton Fair, plus 411 leaders ex-
penses were discussed and agreed
upon.
There will be two Clandeboye 411
Homemaking clubs and leaders are
Mrs. John De Weerd, assisted by Airs.
Eric Vanneste, Mary Ann Koricina
and Kim Amos.
The program, Education and
Cultural Activities, was well
presented by convener, Lucille Blake.
"Education is like a road that never
ends." How far we go depends on us.
It begins at home with the 3 R's,
Respect, Reverence and Responsibili-
ty, followed by Reading, Writingand
Arithmetic, learned at school. With
school buses to take students to
school, everyone is offered an oppor-
tunity to get an education. Even if you
are not in a position to get a college
or university degree, there are
libraries and education programs
available to everyone.
Reading is an education in itself.
there are many opportunities to learn
in courses offered, such as in 411
clubs, stained glass, macrame. knit-
ting, sewing, quilting, etc. "Those
that have a hobby, own a mental
island of refuge."
Mrs. Blake completed her program
by reminding the members that 1985
is the "Year of the Youth". Let us
hope and pray there will be more jobs
available for our young people.
President Elsie Lewis, presented
Beth Neil with a beautiful potted
chrysanthemum, to acknowledge her
75th birthday as an active member in
the Clandeboye Women's Institute.
Lunch conveners, Marion llodgson
and Velma -Hardy, served a tasty
lunch, assisted by the hostess.
United Church Women
Mrs. Wilmer Scott was hostess,
Tuesday, for January meeting of the
U.C.W.
Gwen Lynn conducted the worship
assisted by Betty Coughlin and Irene
Lynn. The theme, "Back to Business,
but not as Usual."
She gave a Happy New Year
reading. Mary Scott led the study,
"Living the hard Gospel in South
Korea". She read the story of -
Timothy Moon, a poet and prophet in
Korea.
A get well card was sent to Jean
Hardy who fell recently, breaking a
bone in her arm.
February 14 will be the
Presbyterial meeting at the
Metropolitan United Church, London.
The hostess served lunch and a social
time was enjoyed.
Personals
Patricia and John Brownlee of
Gravenhurst visited recently with
their mothers, Mrs. Viola Carter of
Clandeboye and Mrs. Myrtle
Brownlee of Craigholme. This was the
first time out for John since having a
bad heart attack, in November. He
hopes to return to teaching in another
month.
Wilfred Cunningham of Craigholme
is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital
where he will undergo surgery, on
Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ron Westman have
returned from a three week holiday
in Florida.
Birthday greetings are extended to
Mrs. Isobel Simpson on her 80th bir-
thday, January 17. Her family had a
surprise, pot luck dinner and birthday
party for her on Sunday in the lounge
at the Craigwiel Apartment Complex,
Ailsa Craig.
Eleven tables were in play at the
euchre party at St. James Church on
tuesday evening. Prize winners were
- High Scores, Claire Smeikol and Bob
Latta; Lone Hands, Mary Scott and
Otto Darling; Low Scores - Louise and
Alton O'Neil. Next party will be
January 22.
Alan Cunningham conducted the
service at St. James Anglican
Church, on Sunday, and Mrs. Hazel
Cunningham gave the message. Rev.
Bruce Pocock is in hospital recover-
ing from recent surgery. Next Sun-
day, Ernal Cunningham, of London,
will be the guest speaker.
Congratulations! to Arnold and
Lucille Blake who celebrated their
40th wedding anniversary on January
6. A party in their honour, for family
and friends, was held at the home of
Norman and Dorothy Blake.

Euchre at Shipka

Seven tables were in play at the
progressive euchre party at Shipka
Community centre Wednesday
evening.

and Ervin Devine, were Gertie and

Miller, Annie and Hugh Morenz. The
occasion was to celebrate Gertie and
Ervin's birthdays. In the social time
games of solo were played.
Don, Sharon and Jamie Baker, call -
,d at a funeral home in Windsor last
Tuesday night to pay respects to their
12 year-old cousin. Glenn Ducharme,
who was killed in an accident.

Adams of London spent the weekend
with Brock's parents and brother.

This was the three week old baby's
first visit to his grandparents home.

Dashwood WI to hold euchres

Dashwood Women's Institute met
Monday afternoon Jan. 7 with the ex-
ecutive in charge. Mrs. Emil Becker,
president, opened the meeting and an-
nounced this is the Year of the Youth.
Fourteen members answered the
roll call with an item from the Hand
book.
Mrs. Eben Weigand reported on the
executive meeting in Hensall.
The District Annual is May 16 at
Usborne Central School with Elim-
ville W.I. in charge. Dashwood is in
charge of the Memorial.
It was decided to hold Euchres with
the first one January 16'al Communi-
ty Centre at 8 p.m.
A study on the handbook followed.
making members aware of their
responsibilities in office. Mrs.
Howard Datars read a recipe for New
Year's Punch.
The next meeting will be held
Wednesday Feb. 5 at 8 p.m.
Mrs. Becker had 5 tables set up and
the ladies were to go to each table and
do the projects. Lunch brought a busy
afternoon to a close.
Ladies Aid
Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid met
Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 9 with
group 1 and convener Mrs. Dave
Rader in charge of Devotions and
lunch. President Mrs. Florence
Martene opened the meeting with a
hymn, scripture reading and prayer.
.Mrs. Irvin Rader read a 1936 Ladies
Aid meeting.
Rev. M. Mellecke took for the topic
"The Church Gains Power." An an-
cient Christmas hymn proved to be
"Savior of the Nations Come" written
by Saint Ambrose who lived from
340-397: 'He was known as the father
of hymnody. He was a Christian and
relationship of the church and state
and the church grew in influence and
power.
The roll call was answered by 14
members. The Altar Guild is Mrs.
Frieda Keller and Mrs. Irvin Rader.
Cards of thanks and donations were
received.
Mrs. M. Mellecke and Miss Helen
Nadiger are the nominating commit-
tee. Auditors are Mrs. Esther Salmon
and Mrs. Lorne Becker.
The next meeting will be Feb. 13 at
2 p.m. with group 2 in charge.
Mrs. Dave Rader's closing devo-
tions were followed by lunch.
Dashwood Seniors
Dashwood Seniors will play shuf-
fleboard and cards each Tuesday
afternoon at the community centre 2-4
p.m. until further notice. -
Personals
Mr. and Mrs. Becker visited the lat-
ter's brother-in-law, !toward Sim-
mons at the K -W hospital, Kitchener,
last week.
Senior Citizens will meet Monday,
January 21, at 2 in the afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Miller were
Thursday visitors with Mrs. Irvin
Rader.

The theme for the January meeting
of the Calvary United Church Women
was "The Changing Year". The ex-
ecutive was in charge with Mrs. Sid
Neeb as chairlady.

Her opening thought on entering
this New Year of 1985 was to think of
ways we can make our lives richer
and fuller for the next twelve months.
A New Year's poem was read follow-
ed by singing the hymn "Another Day
is Dawning".
Mrs. Mildred Kellerman, Mrs.
Eben Weigand, Mrs. Syd Baker and
Mrs. 'Jim Weigand each read a
passage of scripture pointing out to us
how we can approach the New Year
by making some good resolutions and
working to keep them.
Mrs. Sid Neeb offered prayer. The
worship portion of the meeting dos-
ed by singing hymn "Ring Out the
Old".
Rev. Barbara Laing officially in-
stalled the officers for the coming
year. Mrs. Don Gaiser, president,
welcomed the members with a New
Year's thought. Several cards of ap-
preciation were read as well as letters
from various organizations
acknowledging donations.
- Christmas Cheer boxes were pack-
ed and delivered by Mrs. Syd Baker
and Mrs. Gerald Mason. The commit-
tee for January is Mrs. Aldene Wolfe
and Mrs. Syd Neeb.
Mrs. Evert Haist, Mrs. Earl Guen-
ther and Mrs. Letta Taylor were
made honorary members of the
U.C.W.
The Huron Perth annual meeting
will be in Wingham Jan. 28. The
"Learning for Lent" series is to be
held at Zurich United Church Feb. 21,
28 and March 7. Westminster
weekend will be held May 24-26 in
London with Mrs. Doris Zurbrigg of
Listowel as Dean.
The meeting closed by repeating
the Mizpah benediction. Lunch was
served by the committee in charge.
