CLOSE TO BUDGET
The final financial picture for the
South Huron rec : centre .J.oard of
management won't be known fot',a
while yet, but indications are that 1984
will end up very close to budget.
Finance chairman Carolyn Merner
told the members this week that there
may be a deficit of something under
$1,000. "It will be extremely close,"
she predicted.
Exeter council representative
good to come that close on a budget
of about one third of a million dollars.
Some accounts receivable have still
not been received by the board to
enable them to close the past year's
books.
NEAR MISS - The ball just fails to clear the net for the SHDHS senior girls' volleyball team during
their three -team match at the local school this week. The girls split with Clinton and Parkhill teams
in the event. Shown on the floor from the back are: Diane Willis, Pauline Brand, Andrea Pearce, Cheryl
Dowson, Kendra Arthur and Irene Brand.

afford her own car.
City women often have better ac-
cess to day care and fewer transpor-
tation problems. However, although
city wages for both men and women
tend to be higher, living expenses also
tend to be higher for city dwellers.
These lower figures are the result
of Exeter's being a rural area, accor-
ding to Canada Employment. In a
rural area there is a higher percen-
tage of people in unskilled and semi-
skilled occupations, which don't
generally pay as well as skilled
occupations.
According to John Gillespie,
manager of the Canada Employment
Centre in Goderich, most Huron
County workers are employed in ser-
vice industries, with agriculture and
factory work the second and third
place employers. "Agriculture work
tends to be non -skilled labour, and it
pays Tess than production work in a
factory," Gillespie says.
Gillespie also says, "The service in-
dustry tends to be lower paid than
manufacturing." Most women work-
ing Exeter are employed in service
industries, in secretarial and clerical
positions, and as waitresses. There
are very few professional women in
Exeter. But there are other reasons
ter women a rtule.s than
a f the wages of their male
counterparts.
One reason is that these figures in-
clude both full and part time work.
Women are more likely than men to
work part time because of child care
and household responsibilities. But
full time work in service industry jobs
isn't always available, Gillespie says,
and many of the available jobs pay
minimum wage.
Other factors affecting Huron Coun-
ty women's wages are a lack of day
LACK OF INTEREST
A lack of interest may see less than
half the winter programs offered by
the South Huron rec centre come to-
fruition.
ofruition.
Rec director Lynn Farquhar told
the board on Thursday she was disap-
pointed in the turnout for the registra-
tion and the lack of applicants may
result in only five or six of the 11
courses being offered.
There were only one or two
registrants for a couple of the craft
courses.
Gillespie was basing his informa-
tion partially on a study done recent-
ly by the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food called "Women
in Rural Life". One of the con-
tributors to the study was a Clinton -
based group called "Women Today".
The group tries to lend support to
women and deals with employment
and other women's issues.
Another factor that may affect in-
comes for both sexes in Exeter is
education. The percentage of Exeter
citizens with university degrees is
lower than that of Ontarians -as a
whole.

Ten percent of Exeter residents
have at least some university, while
16.9 percent of the provincial popula-
tion has that education level.
However, 34 percent of Exeterites
have another form of post secondary
training, compared to only 22.8 per-
cent of Ontarians as a whole. That
could mean community college, an
agricultural college like Centralia. or
a private school like Westervelt
Business School in London.
There are more Exeter residents
with less than grade 9 education than
the average in Ontario - 22 percent of
Exeterites have less than grade 9 as
compared with just 17.4 of Ontarians
generally.
