Foolishness, or way to survive?
But there is no instant fix on
violence. Many believe there must be
a concerted effort to lift society's
general level of morality and respect
tar other persons, that there is a
desperate need for developing sound
moral consciences in the young
c )titers believe that something as sim-
ple as staking it harder to get guns.
Recently. 1 read that tate last public
hanging in Canada took place at
Goderich in -1869. Of course. there
were hangings after that date. up to
1962. in fact. Ilowever. it is only nine
years ago that Canada abolished
capital punishment.
Today. there is outcry to bring it
back. which is the outcome of the rage
telt over the killing ol seven police in
1984. '''here is also the fear that in this
•country, violence is so out of control
that only the death penalty will con-
tain it.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney
has sated there will be a tree vote on
the issue in the House of Commons.
A pull taken in November of M.P.s in-
dicated that if the vote had been taken
then. the death penalty would be

separate itself from most western na--
tions and join the shrinking list ol
countries like Iran. South Africa and
the Soviet Union that still use it.

Manslaughter is killing through
negligence. but without intent to kill.
Some people feel we should at least
enact the death penalty on those con-
victed of first degree murder.
1lowever a person is just as dead if he
is killed by a (trunk driver as he is if
hes killed by a bank robber. Manv
more people are killed by (drunk
drivers than by rubbers. yet. 00 one
would suggest that we hang them. and
in tact. they are often given a light

Rev. Dennis Doyle. who has work-
ed in two federal penitentiaries says
the fear. the anger. the thirst for
revenge that leads us to demand the
death penalty are the sante emotions
that lead to murder. "We're used to
instant -everything. \1'e want instant
solutions to violence." says a member
of the Church Council on Justice.
would prevent many deaths. They
could be right...of 73 police killed bet-
ween 1961 and 1980. 71 were shot.
Surely it's not an infringement on
human rights to make gun control so
rigid that potential killers cannot
have access to a wide array of lethal
weapons',
There are others who advocate the
banning of the violence we swatch on
Right -4.1 television saying this would
reduce violent crimes. None of these -
things stop murder completely. but
they might do a lot more to deter it
than the electric chair.
01 course. -it tears at -our souls•when
we hear of a brutal murder. especial-
ly it the victim is a.defenseless child.
But revenge in the torte of the death
penalty has never restored a dead
person nor, I think. brought much
consolation to the family of the vic-
tim. It seems to tee. this kind of
revenge only feeds the sickness of our
society.
Christ said. "You have learned
what was told in the past. 'an eye for
an eye. and a tooth for a tooth.' but
what I tell you is this: Do not set
yourself against the person who
wrongs you. If someone slaps you on
the right cheek, turn and offer hint
your left." Is that lust plain
foolishness. or is it the way to our
survival"
