Maioney gets confidence vote from Maple Leafs owner
Glenn and Bob Thirlwall.
Speaking of all-star games, two members of the St. Marys Lin-
colns who played their pre -junior hockey in the area participated
in the OHA Junior 'B' all star contest in St. Thomas, Saturday
night.
They were forwards John Kernick from Exeter and Jeff
Shipley of Lucan.
One of our 1985 predictions that Dan Maloney would be fired
as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs apparently won't come true,
at least for awhile.
Leafs owner Harold Ballard has given Maloney and assistant
coach John Brophy a vote of confidence saying, "I don't care
whether people like it or not, I'm 100 percent behind my coaches
and I don't care what anyone says, I'm the guy who pays the bills."
Ballard may have confidence in his coaches and players, but,
that can't be said for many of the fans. Empty seats are becom-
ing more frequent at the Gardens as the Leafs continue as the worst
team in the league.
Probably the hardest hit financially by the Toronto club's fall
on hard times are the scalpers who have trouble selling extra
tickets. Saturdays game against the second poorest team, the Van-
couver Canucks was far from being sold out.
As the NHL teams near the halfway mark of the 1984-85
schedule, it seems like the Leafs will have to come out of their shell
quickly to make the playoffs.
With 40 games gone by and 14 points out of the final playoff
spot in the Norris division, it will take a major shakeup to turn
the Leafs around.
A big trade is probably the answer, but, that's easier said than
done. Knowing the Leafs are desperate most rival general
managers will ask for the moon.
The second move would be to bring up a batch of players from
the minor leagues. Here again comes a_problem. The Toronto top
f tharl en s is also having troubles.
The Saints are sixth in the seven team American League
southern division and only Moncton -in the other division has fewer
points. St. Catharines has won only 12 of 38 games.
Coach Maloney may have Ballard's confidence, but, his
nerves are wearing a bit thin as demonstrated when he went after

goal of the first period on an
unassisted effort.
What proved to be the winning goal
was notched near the six minute
mark of the second period. Bill Chip -
chase played the puck back to the
blueline at the right point to Al Flynn
and he hit Keith Ahrens with a perfect
pass at the corner of the net and the
captain promptly flipped the puck in-
to the net.
Later in the period, Scott Burton
and Jim McDonald completed the Ex-
eter scoring on passes from Bob
McDonald and Ahrens.

a fan following a recent loss.
The fan Richard Mellon apparently offered to come down to
the bench and help Maloney with his coaching duties. Ballard
threatened to revoke the fan's season tickets, but, found Mellon
got his tickets through corporate channels on a game -to -game
basis.
The situation is different in Vancouver where owner Frank
sports spotlight
by Ross Haugh
Griffith and his wife Louise agree with the fans that the club has
been terrible. After a recent loss, Mrs. Griffith snatched a paper
bag from a fan and left the arena with it over her head.
The Toronto situation can be summed up the same as it was
by Harry Neale in Vancouver a couple of years ago, "We can't win
at home and we can't win on the road. I can't think of anywhere
else to play."
Fans love it
While talking this week with Leon Paul of Kirkton about the
demise of the Kirkton Garden Party we learned that he has already
signed to do the announcing for the 1985 harness racing season at
the Woodstock Raceway.
In a recent issue of the Canadian Sportsman, editor Bruce
Johnston described Lee Paul as a combination of Mel Allen, Billy
Graham and Yogi Berra.
Johnston went on to say, "Paul's own enthusiasm and excite-
ment comes through and he simply ignores the occasional miscue.
The crowd loves it."
While the Kirkton Garden Party may not be classed as a spor-
ting event we feel saddened by the Kirkton Community Associa-
tion's decision to suspend operations for at least one year.
