Gentle ghosts in antiques
Occasionally, when 1 keep shop at
Gresham House Antiques at Hensall,
1 feel surrounded by the gentle ghosts
of those who once owned the lovely
wares displayed about me. Over in a
corner is a low Victorian table, a
checker board inlaid in its top. I'm
ajmost sure I've caught a glimpse of
at least one debonair spirit checking
another's king, as he blithly lifts the
cut -glass decanter to pour two goblets
to the brim.
While polishing an early 1800s
mahogony dining table 1 strain my
ears for lilting laughter as 1 fancy
four beautiful ladies in flowing gowns
sitting on the Queen Anne chairs,
sharing gossip and sipping tea from
delicate cups painted with pink
blossoms and dark blue rims. And did
I just imagine it, or did I really get the
whiff of freshly baked sugar cookies
as I lifted the yellow biscuit barrel?
On the walnut sideboard a set of
ivory glove stretchers lie as if just
dropped by a careful lady who used
them on her elbow length white kid
gloves. Beside them is her button
hook for fastening high, soft leather
boots. And when I move some tiny
doilies I wonder whose fingers flew
with crochet hook to engineer the
yards of dainty lace?
The rosewood lap desk is inscribed
with the name C. Nichol, who pro-
bably lived over 100 years ago.
Brushing its satiny wood with my
hand, I wonder. "Who was C. Nichol.
I'm sure she was a woman for the
desk is far too romantic for a mere
man! The thin glass bottle still holds
traces of black ink that smudged and

splattered the rose velvet writing pad.
To whom did she write her many let-
ters? Her lover? Her children? There
are several compartments, some of
them very secret but if you find just
the right place to touch, a spring
dark, polished wood. Pull down the
door and you find a white porcelain
basin with a tap for water to flow
from a small tank at the back. Close
up the door and the basin tips up to
empty in another tank at the bottom.

releases a flap to reveal three tiny
drawers which surely must have held
dear C. Nichol's tender tetters and
most secret thoughts.
I climb the stairs to the second
storey. Did the tong mirrored door of
the huge golden oak armoire move
quietly shut'' Was that the sound of -
childish tittering? The door pulls
open, but no child is hiding there....
only a long starched christening
dress, and some long -ago nanny's big
white apron hanging at attention as
if ready to spring into action.
There is a scent of sweetness in the
air as I pick up the cut glass powder
howl and perfume bottle from a mar-
ble topped dressing table. I can't help
wondering if the same lady who used
them was one of those who protected
her face behind the needle point pole
screen, while her husband blew up the
blaze in the fireplace with the big
brass bellows, hanging on the wall.
And who, I -wonder, crept into a bed
made cozy by the shiny copper bed
warmer? And who primped
themselves in front of the long swing-
ing mirror? And who washed in the
lovely china bowl decorated with
bright red roses?
I slide open the deep drawer ofthe
maple bonnet chest. In the shadows
of my mind there's an elegant hat, pil-
ed with floppy flowers and veils, just
waiting to he pinned on top of high
swept hair. How many ladies have
kept their best bonnets there?
At least one Edwardian gentleman

A slanted mirror allowed the
gentleman to shave and do his toilette
with ease, and 1 think what a wonder-
fully, ingenious, convenient con-
trivance it was until I remember that
it was likely some poor woman ser-
vant who lugged the water and emp-
tied the slop tank so the gentleman
could have such comfort.
And so, I prowl around the place,
touching an antique ribbon plate, lif-
ting a blue glass vase to catch the
light, sitting on a delicately carved
chair, and sensing the people from the
past still with me. And it seems to me
they're happy, and glad there are
those who still cherish their treasured
belongings.
