Crediton United Church was the setting of a quiet and pretty wed-
ding when Greta Schade and Vernon Schatz were united in marriage
by Rev. Brian Elder on Saturday', July 29. They were attended by
Carole Park and Ruth Witherspoon, daughters of the bride and Jack

Well, it's time to dig out those o1(1
handwritten recipes, which may have
long been tucked behind the
microwave cookbook and instant
cake mixes' In celebration of our
Canadian heritage in 1985. Parks
Canada and Blue Mountain Pottery
Limited of Collingwood. Ontario have
joined together to sponsor a heritage
Cooking Contest at fairs across
Canada this summer.
To date. more than 200 fair boards.
including Exeter, Kirkton and Zurich.
have enthusiastically agreed to par-
ticipate. All judging and awarding of
prizes will be made in conjunction
with cooking contests at the kcal
fairs. First and second prizes have
been donated by Blue Mountain Pot-
tery Ltd. and will be made in conjunc-
tion with cooking contests at the local
fairs. First and second prizes have

company's newest line of oven-to-
tableware-- The Georgian Collection.
The Heritage Cooking contest is
just one of the thousands of events
planned this year in recognition of the
100th anniversary of the founding of
Canada's first national park at Banff.
Alberta. Members of the National
Parks Citizens Centennial Committee
are working together with Parks
Canada on the cooking contest, an
idea which started as' a centennial
project of the Ontario Region of Parks
Canada and has grown to a national
event.
From Prince Edward Island to
British Columbia. cooks are dusting
off their recipes as they prepare to
meet the challenge of cooking and
presenting food as their ancestors did.
If you don't have your own treasure
of family recipes, other reliable
sources are Canadian cookbooks.
household manuals. newspapers.
periodicals and almanacs.
Any recipe .for foodstuffs
used provid d1t e i Ty pe acs from
before 1900 -and is from a Canadian
source. A copy of the original recipe
and notation about its source zinc!
history must be attached to the entry.
Other covering notes about the recipe
or product are also welcome. and a
modern equivalent of the original
recipe must be attached.
It is proposed that judging be bas-
ed on a possible total of 11)0 points: 30
points for the recipe, 20 for the pro-
duct. 30 for presentation. and 211 for
the modern equivalent recipe. Judges
will be looking for such
characteristics as whether a recipe
relates in some way to the history oI
Canada. whether the exhibitor has us-
ed ingredients that were available at
the time the recipe was used, whether
the serving dish reflects the period
and style of the recipe. and whether
the modern equivalent recipe has
been suitable adapted for use in to-
day's kitchens.
Participants are being asked to test
their originality, not only in their
-selected cif recipes, but also in an in-
novative presentation. such as ban -
nock bread in a willow basket or tea
scones on an antique carie dish.
R. Benson Lilly, president of Blue
Mountain Pottery Limited. says his
company's Georgian Bay collection is
appropriate as prizes in this Heritage
Cooking Contest. since the products
combine the old and the new. •In the
rich, warm colours of the terra-cotta
clays that are mined in and around
Blue Mountain. each item is
decorated with a fired -on decal
reminiscent of late nineteenth cen-
tury printing styles. They are glazed
on the inside and safe for use in con-
ventional and n►icntwave ovens and
' dishwashers.
Blue Mountain Pottery will also
cover the costs 01 shipping the prizes.
