Tykes lose in Walkerton
Saturday, the Exeter Tykes travell-
ed to Walkerton for their annual tour-
nament. In the first game Walkerton
pounded three Exeter pitchers for 22
runs on 18 hits as Exeter lost 22-1.
Only three Exeter runners reached
base. Fred Steciuk singled but was
left on second base. Later in the game
Steve Farquhar walked and eventual-
ly scored on Sean McCann's rbi
single. •
Exeter then played Kitchener.
Again things didn't look good because
in the top of the first the first five Kit-
chener batters scored to make it 5-0.
However. in the bottom of the first,
the first six Exeter batters scored. Six
walks by Jamie Rolph, Ryan Stuart,
Mark Lynn, Paul Charrette, Sean
McCann, and Brad Thompson and an
error cost the Kitchener team. After
one inning it was 7-5 for Exeter.
The game took a dramatic change
as it went scoreless for three innings.
It was a five -inning game and Jason
Heywood was looking to set Kitchener
Ladies slopitch
Four teams are struggling in a
close race for top spot in the Exeter
ladies' slowpitch league.
Most games which were to be
rescheduled from July 4 have been
played. Downtown Dollies took Huron
Park Devils 11-8, South Iluron
Hospital flattened Canadian Tire 27-5
and Albatross Angels left JJ's winless
by defeating them 11-3. Sundowners
and Exeter Indianetles have their
game to go yet.

Hospital -and Good Times battled to a
9-9 tie. Downtown Dollies flushed JJ's
11-2 and Iluron Park Devils edged

the first Kitchener batter in the fifth.
However, a solo homerun and then a
two -run homer gave Kitchener an 8-7
victory, eliminating Exeter in a hard-
fought game.
Heywood pitched all five innings
giving up eight runs and four walks
while striking out nine.
Tuesday, walks killed Oakridge as
Exeter won 8-5 after being down 4-1
after 41., innings.
Saturday, in a long seven -inning
game, Exeter defeated Listowel 15-12.
Sean McCann and Fred Steciuk
reached base and scored all three
tinies at bat.
Steciuk drove in three runs with a
double and a single. Jason Heywood
pitched the final 51:, innings allowing
only two hits and striking out eight to
record the win.
In the fourth, with Exeter ahead
12-10, some excellent defensive play
held Listowel to a 3 up, 3 down inning.
Steve Stire made two excellent cat-
ches on throws from shortstop Paul
Charrette and third baseman Ryan
Lindenfield to nip the runners by a
step.
Then to end the inning, right -fielder
Derek van Dyken made a stellar run-
ning atch.of y ball headi!Vol., the

Soccer squirts play improving
In squirt soccer play, Exeter I con-
tinued its improved play of the last
couple of weeks. Ben Van Bergen pro-
vided shutout goaltending and
Jeremy took care of all of the scoring
in a wino Arva. Also playing well
were Amanda Smith and Chad
Gilfillan.
Chris McDonald scored two goals to
lead Exeter II to their fourth of the
win of the season. It was an all-round
effort for the Exeter club with
McDonald supplying the finishing
touches.
In atom action, Exeter 1 came up
with one of its worst efforts of the
season dropping a'9-1 decision to
Lucan. Coach Bill Dinney was a little
disappointed with his charges, but is
looking for an improvement next
week.
Exeter III travelled to Nairn and
despite playing shorthanded trounc-
ed Nairn 9-1. Sivichay Sengkhoun-
many led the Exeter attack with three
goals. Danny Mathers and Jaimie
Dougall each booted a pair of goals
and Marty DeBruyn and Brian Brand
scored in single fashion.
In the mosquito division, Exeter 11
rebounded from an early Nairn penal-
ty shot and came back to win 4-2.
Goals were scored by Giselle Char-
rette, Jeff Foster, Tim Brand, and
Chris Gardner. Turning in a good ef-
fort was Steven Cregan.
Exeter 111 travelled 10 Lucan and
were on the short end of a 5-2 score.
Lucan hustled Exeter most of the
game and deserved to win. Scoring
for Exeter were Eric Reimer and
Nicky Szabo. Marty DeBruyn
assisted on both goals.
In pee wee action, Exeter I re-
bounded from their one-sided loss of
a week ago and defeated Grand Bend
6-3.
Exeter II travelled to Ilderton
without five regulars. but with three
mosquitos in the lineup managed to
keep their unbeaten record intact
with a 2-0 win.
Mark Van Bruaene and Greg Lam-
port scored the goals and Graham Ar-
thur was in goal to record the shutout
Playground underway
The "Bert N' Ernie Club" and
"Sports Development Programs"
started on July 9 at the South Huron
Rec. Centre with lots of activities and
special events lined up
This week the "Bert N' Ernies"
have been getting to know each other,
the Rec Centre facilities and various
places around town with visits so far
to McNaughton Park, the Victoria
Park wading pool and several
businesses downtown.

vaious outdoor sports and games fill-
ed up the first week ending with
"Backwards Day" on Friday. All the
youngsters were required to wear
their clothes backwards
The Sports Club were introduced to
several outdoor games and activities
Tuesday. and Wednesday leaders
organized a track and field meet
followed by a basketball demonstra-
tion by Dianne Dearing.
Thursday the 'youngsters _ex-
perimented with tie -dying followed by
a ballhockey game and in the after-
noon Constable Barnes visited the
Rec. Centre and assisted the leaders
with a bike rodeo. On Friday, the Club
visited the Exeter Swimming Pool
where head supervisor Sharon Run-
dle gave a talk on water safety, and
then the youngsters attended the
afternoon public swim.
Both clubs are always looking for
new members so if interested call or
drop by the Rec Centre

Royals play seven
The Exeter Royals completed a
busy week tlonday night as they con-
cluded a siring of seven games in
seven day's.
Tuesday they travelled to Poplar
1li11 where they came away with a 2-11
victory in eight innings.
Dave 1'rout led oil the top of the
eighth with a pinch hit infield single
and eventually came around to score
the winning run to back a strong Iwo
hit pitching performance by Dan

Wednesday night they opened a
best -of -three O.A.S A playoff roused
in Petrolii by dropping an 8-1 decision
to the host club. -
Thursday they returned home to
post a 15-4 decision over visiting
1,ietiry. beading Exeter al the plate
was Dan, 1leywood \\ho had a single
and triple in fire trips with two runs
scored and three RBI's.
Gary Skinner also scored twice and
drove in three runs with a first inning
triple.
Starting pitcher John Kernick went
three innings to pick up the win as he
allowed one run on no hits.

The Royals then journeyed to Tara
fora weekend tournament. After win-
ning their first two games they drop-
ped an "A” division semi-final game
Sunday by a 7-6 score.
Monday they bowed out of the
O.A.S.A. playdowns as they dropped
a 1-0 decision in an exciting game
against Pelrolia.
Starting and losing pitcher Dave
Leonhardt pitched a strong game as
he allowed only four hits while strik-
ing out seven. He did not walk a
batter.
Richard Schilbe led the offence as
he managed the only two hits allow-
ed by winning pitcher Ken Smith.
The Royal's next game will be
Thursday night as they host West ('or-
ners in South western fastball league
action.
Ladies lead
lawn bowling
Isabel Rogerson. Olive Hicks and
Lorna Spence each scored two vic-
tories and aggregates of 24 to share
first place in Tuesday's regular jitney
of the Exeter lawn bowling club.
Rose Blanchard was fourth with 23
followed by Grace ('roper 19 and
Allan Johns 18.
Thursday night it was again close
competition with Bill Lamport and
Gertrude Hamilton deadlocked for
top spot With aggregates of 25. Next
came Ray Smith 23 and Thelma
Russell 22.
Saturday night. the lie situation
continued with Percy Campbell and
Rose Blanchard all even at the top
