Survey tells abou
A recent survey taken by the Coaching Association of Canada
has produced some interesting results.
The survey was taken at random of 2,000 coaches across
Canada to learn more about their lifestyles, buying habits and
kl interests.
It showed 65 percent of the CAC members are from 30 to 49
years of age and seven out of every 10 are married.
Of those interviewed 80 percent consume milk and fruit juices
regularly and their favourite snack foods are fruits. potato chips
and peanuts.
Half of the coaches indicated they spend their leisure time at
sports or physical fitness and only 41 percent watch television on
a regular basis.
Almost two-thirds said they subscribe regularly to news or
sports publications. Topping the list were MacLean's, Sports Il-
lustrated, Time, National Geographic and Reader's Digest.
The most significant statistic indicated that 95 percent were
interested in attending coaching clinics in Canada, featuring na-
tional and international speakers.
Of those surveyed, 50 percent would like to attend clinics
overseas and almost half of those would prefer to combine the clinic
with a family holiday', if the price was right.
All Stars maybe
Although the annual major league baseball game is schedul-
ed for July 16 in Minnesota, there is still a possibility it could be
cancelled.

Very little progress has been made in negotiations between
the owners and players and a strike can not be ruled out.
Because of a possible strike, the tight pennant races in the two
eastern divisions could be very important.

crucial.
While the Tigers and Blue Jays battle for first in theAmerican
league east, the western teams will have a lot to say about the out-
come. For nearly a month, the two divisions play each other.
Getting back to the all star contest, the method of selecting
the players continues to be controversial.
We have no quarrel with the fans picking the teams, but, they
continue year after year to pick players on past performances.
Although the Blue Jays have players at every position on the
ballot, they are not higher than third on any spot according to the

American league manager Sparky Anderson will be adding to
the lineup picked by the fans and he has indicated he will likely
..choose three Toronto players.
The obvious choice is pitcher Dave Steib. After Steib blanked
the Tigers Friday night, Anderson said it was one of the best pit-
ched games be had seen in a long time.
If two other Jays are added to the all stars we would suggest
catcher Ernie Whitland shorts top Tony Fernandeg.
In recent days both Toronto manager Bobby Cox and Sparky
Anderson of the Tigers have been criticized for handling of their
pitchers.
After Aurelio Lopez lost Sunday's game to Toronto, callers to
Wit were chastising Anderson for not bringing Willie Hernandez
in.
Tuesday night, Hernandez gave up home runs in the ninth and
lOth as the Orioles eked out a 5-4 decision. Managers can't win,
can they?
